Constipation SOS

Recommended Posts

I had a problem with this for WEEKS after surgery. Even called my surgeon in tears. He recommended Milk of Magnesia to get things going initially. Worked like a charm and didn't give me the dreaded cramps. I can't do metamucil AT ALL. The gas it creates is worse than the Constipation. Doc recommended 4 oz. of prune juice at bedtime, bump up my Water intake and to eat three or four PEELED sections of a grapefruit daily. The pithy stuff around the grapefruit sections can give your band a little trouble, so be sure to peel them. This has made all the difference in the world for me. I no longer have problems with this. I don't even have to do the prune juice anymore. The grapefruit is a miracle food.< /p>

doesn't the Fiber add more gas to the mix? I'm to the point where my stomach hurts all the time whether I eat or not, drink or not...and I've been taking Miralax for the past week. I've been going but the gas is atrocious and very painful and doesn't go away!!! Any ideas??

I hate prunes, but I love plums. Plum Smart is a drink that helps me. They used to only make a full sugar one, but now they make a light one that is called Plum Smart Light! It really helps get things going.

A travel mug of coffee on a brisk morning walk is also very moving!

Also check any painkillers you might be taking. Anything with codeine or any of the opiates in it (eg Oxycodone) will cause Constipation. You might have to switch to something that doesn't give that problem.

I've had problems with it too. I take Benefiber when I remember. A couple of weeks ago I added Kraft LiveActive cheese into my diet and it has actually made a difference. I've gone 3 days in a row. It is weird because you would think cheese would have the opposite affect but it says the live culture helps. I haven't had any Benefiber during that time either.

I do find that regularly taking a probiotic helps. For me, it really helps eliminate the gas, too. I was using PB8, but since my last fill standard size gelcaps make me uncomfortable so I'm taking someone else's recommendation to try the little pearls. Verdict is still out on whether those work as well as PB8 did. I might try opening the gelcap and mixing PB8 into a drink, but I think then my stomach acid might kill off the cultures. They say to find one that won't dissolve til it gets into your intestines.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
