Post Op Update and Beware of Liquid Vitamins

Recommended Posts

I'm on my third day post op and am still on pain meds and just started rating Soup and apple sauce. That's pretty good stuff considering three weeks on protien shakes, etc! I'm really sore and tired. I think that is to be expected after all of this. I walked at Walmart today and Blockbuster. Also, I've been taking the GASX strips religiously. Today I got to take a shower which was really awesome. There's nothing worse than feeling bad and not being able to really get clean.:tt1:

I decided to get my hubby to take me out to get some liquid vitamins to help me ensure I'm getting all the nutrients I need to recover well. We went to a well known Vitamin shop. (I won't mention the name.) I got a large bottle of "good tasting" liquid Vitamins. Well, at least that's what it said on the label. It was darkish orange when I poured out the measurement of the liquid and smelled horrific. I took a little taste and nearly lost it. I'm going to stick with Flinstone's chewable I think now.:frown:

All in all, I'm definitely glad I did this. However, just like anything else, this is an adjustment period.

Liquid Centrum works for me - No issues w/stomach & I have Crohns. Pretty fussy tummy & anything other than liquid or a shot results in cramping (pre / post band). The chewables as mentioned above are better than nothing - but require a higher dose.

I say try a bunch - there are so many on the market now you can find something that covers your nutritional needs.

For a yummy "liquid" multi, try Emergen-C Multi-Vitamin. You mix a little packet of powder with 4-6 oz of Water to make a strawberry-flavored drink. I had to order mine online though -- my drugstore carries like 7 flavors of the regular Emergen-C but not the Multi.

I use Viactiv chews to up my Calcium. Still working on finding a good solution for Iron.

I know exactly the ones you are talking about! Talk about puke inducing! Drinkink Ipecac Syrup is less likely to make you barf than those. I had some too, the store will take them back, they did for me at least. It was pricey stuff too! Very gross!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
