The hair loss is because of surgery -- it happens with any major surgery.

Quote from familydoctor.com:

A number of things can cause excessive Hair loss. For example, about 3 or 4 months after an illness or a major surgery, you may suddenly lose a large amount of hair. This hair loss is related to the stress of the illness and is temporary.

This is what my doc says is usually the cause. Getting adequate protein: we all need to be doing that anyway so the weight we lose is mostly fat, not muscle. But you don't need to eat excessive Protein -- it's not going to help with the hair loss. US RDA is .8 g per kilogram (2.2lbs) of your ideal weight.

i had my surgery 12/07 and now having hair loss. i was wondering if this was normal, how long it last for, any suggestions will be helpful.

Thanks

Danielle:crying:

I have a friend that went through this. My Drs. said Hair loss can happen when we don't get enough Protein and Water. Sounds good to me. I drink Water like a wild man and Protein is not a problem either so hopefully no hair loss.

i lost a ton of my hair for the first 4-6 months after the surgery. this, as i discovered through research, is due to the anesthesia or a major surgery, and can also be caused by deficiencies (etc) due to severe/sudden weightloss. hope this helps. my hair ALL grew back, good as new, if not better.

There are a lot of different opinions about this hair loss thing. I also started losing my hair at about 4 months post-op. I thought the same thing about it being major surgery, etc. But, my dr. and my nutritionist assured me that it's nothing to do with anesthesia (I even asked an anesthesiologist the same question when my husband had surgery and he agreed). They all think it has to do with not getting enough Protein. I can say that when it started falling out, I noticed that I had gotten away from my Protein shakes - I was just getting tired of them. Once I went back to it and rounded out my diet with veges and some fruit, it was fine. Either way, it was important to get enough nutrition in the right areas. I agree with whoever said no need to overdo it on the Protein, just make sure you're getting that first and enough to meet your 60-80 gms a day.

I start out each day with a Protein shake that packs 40 gms right off the bat and tastes like a chocolate blizzard! Not a bad way to get chocolate and protein.:purplebananna:

I too started losing my hair at 4-6 months after surgery and was told by my doctor that it was lack of Protein. Guess what...here I am at 11 months out and it's falling out again...guess I'm slacking on my protein. I certainly have not had any surgery since last year. So...gotta stack up on the protein again.

I guess we're all on the right track. Check out this WebMD article. It says the physical and mental stress from a surgery can be a cause of hairloss. Also Protein, Iron, etc. Hope this helps.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
