Hello from South Carolina

I would suggest you check with your insurance company. I had to meet their requirements as well as what the dr wanted. I had to do 6 months of dr controlled dieting, see a nutritionalist, plus meet their bmi requirements. Then I had to do the seminar, see the specialist who then sent me for sleep study, cardiologist, and pulmonolgist.. I also had to have a whole bunch of lab testing done. I am almost done with the 6 months so hopefully I will have my surgery in November. I know that I will still have to have the preop lab testing and all that done. Sounds like a alot but everything is happening so quickly that my day will be here before I know it.

I don't know how much of that I will have to have done..I don't really have any problems other than the Type 1 Diabetes, so hopefully just the "normal" test and nothing extra....and you are right I'm sure they take their sweet time getting the results to the dr and then dealing with the Insurance, I hope thats not a nightmare!!!

Well pretty much you will have to do the upper GI , and the blood work and what ever else the insurance requires you to do and the classes for nutrition you may want to ask michele at the clinc and ask her what all your insurance requires to have it done and go from there but i am sure it won't be much

I'm not sure if it was Dr. Prickett or my insurance but I had to have proof of weight-loss resistance and I had YEARS of failed diets on record. I also had blood tests, EKG, echocardiogram, psyc eval, and upper GI. There might have been more but I can't remember right now. :wink2: It took four months from my first appointment to surgery but they had a cancellation and I got in quickly otherwise it would have been at least another month.

Hello Everyone..I hope that everyone is doing well. I am doing great! I had my first adjustment on Monday and was scared to death. The needle looked to be 5" long..I almost got up and left, but I didn't. It didn't hurt that much, and the benefits outweigh the little discomfort I did feel. So, I am on my way to the second half of my weight loss. I am down 41 pounds and have about 40-45 to go. Please update the site and let us know how you all are doing. I will keep you in my prayers, please do the same for me.

Have a safe and fun holiday,

Randall P.

Well, it has been 24 days since surgery and I am down 14 pounds. I seem to get hungry quickly so the doc gave me permission to move on to "junior" baby food (I wanted a fill). Yesterday I "had" to attend a retirement dinner for one of my employees at a BBQ place so I tried the pulled pork. I had to get up during the meal and go to the women's room. I didn't "get sick" but I did not tolerate it very well. Now I'm thinking maybe I don't need a fill. If I can't handle pulled pork (fairly close to junior's food) I guess I'd do best to just hang for awhile. Otherwise, things are going great. I am so happy with my decision. You all are in my prayers.

Well, I got banded on 8/25 - two weeks today. Had to go in today because incisions/stitches were giving me some trouble. I have lost 9 lbs. I still have soreness. I was told I could have some soft food and I am looking forward to that. Scheduled my first fill for 9/24.

I got my first fill yesterday and they only put 1.5 cc in. No restriction that I can tell. They did say I could start adding real food this week. I have now lost a total of 12 lbs. in the 4 weeks. MUSC is real conservative with fills and is VERY expensive. I am self pay.

I am having a problem with my fills as well. My doctor only gives 1cc at a time. This is done at special procedures at the main hospital. The cost of my fill was $1650.00..I fill NO more restriction than when I had the surgery. I now have 3 cc's is a 14cc band. So, I am getting a little upset with the fill process. I may have to find someone other than my doctor to do the fills. Does anyone have any good suggestions on fill doctors. My weight loss is about 1lb a week. I am down 46lbs, since July 15, 2008. I guess it is going to slow down now..but I will NOT give up!! Have a blessed night, Randall

Hi everyone, I have been a member for over a year now. I live in Gaston SC. I am finally just getting the nerve to go through with surgery. I have completed all of my pre-op list and waiting on the insurance company info. Dr. Givens in West Columbia is doing the surgery. They are telling me that the sleeve is the best way to go for me. Has anyone had this done yet? I understand the procedure, just still quite nervous. Please let me know if you have had Dr. Givens or if you have had the sleeve surgery done. Thanks all!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
