Friend lost more than me -protein soups

Recommended Posts

My friend had the lap band placed one month after me had less to lose than me and had lost 20kg more than me so far, she says some days or at least 3 or 4 a week all she has is 5 or 6 Protein Soups the soups are 300calories each. Is this healthy to do? she says she will only do till she reaches her goal which is another 10kilos? anyone else doing this? her doctor told her to have fluids for 2 to 3 days after the tightening, mine never told me this, i have had 4 fills, she has had 3 so far. Her doctor told her doing what she is doing was good if it worked for her. any ideas??

The number of fills a person gets is not the issue, it's more of how quickly the fill gets the person to a good restriction level and that varies for each person. The amount of saline at each fill will also determine how quickly a person gets to the right spot.

5 to 6 Protein Soups at 300 each is a calorie intake of 1500 to 1800 calories a day, which is actually not very low at all. And if she is getting her Protein in then that is good as well. The problem with the soups is she is not learning to eat "regular" food in moderation and establishing that habit, but apparently what she is doing is working for her to take the weight off.

How active your friend is versus your level of activity is important as well.

My Dr. advises "full" liquids for two days, followed by two days of soft food after fills. I do get swelling after a fill, so this policy makes sense to me. I then gradually try regular foods to see how they go down.

I generally try to keep my daily calories to 1000 to 1200.

Thank you for your reply, my friend has not been doing excercise, were as i have. but when i get filled next time will stay on the liquids for two days, i am eating everything - but sensible foods, so i am changing my life so will stick to that then, even though may be slower i know will keep off this time.

My husband was banded 1 hour after me & we are extremely competitive. Our Dr "warned" us not to compare, hubby being 6'2 290lb - me 5'1 200lb day of surgery ... Knowing DH will definitely loose faster & he got to restriction 3 months before me. It was a bitter pill to take watching him drop 40lbs in 2months w/little effort, while I'm at the gym 2hrs a day & actually diet. Hubby really hasn't "dieted" the way I have - he pretty much eats/drinks whatever...but MUCH smaller. Me, I can't remeber the last time I had a piece of bread:)

As of today - we are dead even in amount lost. Can't help but smile - but don't gloat, he knows how much I worked before I got to restriction. We compete, but it's in the "healthiest (if that's possible) way" possible...

To compare is easy - but know that this is pretty individualized, no 2 journeys are the same,

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
