Scared that I won't be able to have surgery

Recommended Posts

I've had reoccuring foot and leg cramps for a couple of years. My doctor thought I was over exaggerating when I told him how excruciating the cramps were. I have them at night and sometimes they keep me up most of the night. Last night was a really bad night and if my husband had been home I would've had him take me to the ER. I went to another doctor today because my DR wasn't available. He said I have busitis in both legs and gave me a cortisone shot in both legs. He also did an ultrasound and the arteries in my legs are partially blocked. He's also running more tests and said I may even have blood clot/s. I'm really scared at this point and even more upset that it may keep me from getting banded. My LB surgeon told me the reason people die from surgery is because they get blood clots in their legs. Has anyone successfully had surgery with this condition?

I'm so sorry you are dealing with this. I really don't have any advice but hopefully they can correct the problem with your legs and then you can have LBS. My thoughts are that you won't be able to have surgery until the clots in your legs are under control.

Let us know what happens.

Right.. they will wait until the clots are under control and then most likely you will have to stay in the hospital for 1-2 days after being banded so they can keep those things on your legs and monitor you. You might even have to stay on blood thinners for a while. My friend Diana just got banded last month and she had heart issues and couldn't walk well and they taught her how to give herself her own blood thinner shots and stuff because she was such a high risk, but she's doing great now. Best of luck to you sugar.. and just make surey ou let your band doctor know all of this too.

I didn't deal with it, but have heard of people who have. They just had a longer hospital stay with the extra precautions. Take care of your clots first, the band can come next.

Good luck!

Thank you for everyone's kinds words and words of encouragement.

I just got paperwork from my doctor today. I have to sign a contract stating I understand what is expected of me as well as the risks. I feel like my doctor really cares about his patients health and well being. He's really into people living a healthy lifestyle. I also have 15 very extensive questions I have to answer for the psychologist before seeing him.

I had an appointment with the doctor today to go over the results to find out if I have blood clots in my legs. He said everything came back normal and I don't have clots. The cramping could be from my thyroid problems or Bursitis, for which I was recently diagnosed with. The only thing he saw was that my white blood cell count is elevated, which it also was back in December. Now I have one more thing to worry about get to go for more blood work.

Has your doc ever tested your potassium?

He did mention that my potassium and Calcium levels came back normal. I can't take potassium supplements because of one of the meds I take but I do drink oj, soy milk and eat bananas because of their potassium content.

Looks like you've hooked up with the right doctors and you will be totally knowledgeable about your health situation prior to surgery.

You know, through these threads we all become 'family', and so we feel as though we really "know" you.

So with that being said, you know that we wish you the very best towards getting yourself healthy and banded...^_^

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
