Is the 6 month pre-op diet required by NYU even if my insurance company does not require it?

Also, do you know if they take ANTHEM BCBS insurance?

Thank you.

I have Oxford and they didn't require a 6 mo diet either, so I didn't have to go through that just for NYU. I did have to have a full physical by my pcp, and blood work after attending the seminar. I also had to meet with a psychologist, the surgeons nurse for a medical history review and physical, and a nutritionist. My next visit is to meet with Dr. Fielding, my surgeon at NYU, for my surgical consultation and the surgical coordinator to set a tentative surgery date.

You are meeting with him this coming Wednesday? Lucky you! I have also chosen Dr. Fielding as my surgeon and my surgical consult with him is 4/23. I have tried calling to see if there were any cancellations but the office staff there who answers the phone is really rude. Never in person but always over the phone.

Yes, this Wed. I can not wait. I have other medical conditions and I hope he can still do the procedure. I am on a lot of meds. I am so anxious and nervous I can not sleep.< /p>

Dr. Fielding's a good guy. I have a medical background, and chose Dr. Fielding for a couple of reasons: first off, he has a band himself, which I think is invaluable. Secondly, and most important to me, was that I believe he's probably the most experienced surgeon in the country when it comes to lap banding.

My experience of the surgery, the hospital stay at NYU had a few bumps, I have to say: it is, at some level, a factory. But I'm happy to put up with occasionally less than charming phone personnel and crowded waiting rooms and delays for appointments if that's the price of being operated on someone with vast experience. I can put up with discomfort and inconvenience, but when they're cutting you up, you want the best.

Oh, and I'd include Dr. Ren under that, too.

Another important factor is that they're active in doing research, which means they're familiar with the current medical literature in their field.

So, all in all, going through NYU might not be the most PLEASANT experience, but medically I think they're pretty much untouchable.

PS I had Empire BC/BS, too. They paid for everything except $250.

I found the people on the phone are quite rude, and I have the personality to give it right back. When I go in for my appt, I tell Dr. Ren. I don't know if that gives them the impression I am immature, but I will be damned to be treated like a piece of crap on the phone after the surgery and the cost of it.

With that being said, the staff in the office are great. They work with you to get you an appt you can make and they try to get you in on time. I am very happy with the people in the office.

I agree, the ladies that answer the phone at NYU are a little rude but like Fenton, I could put up with a little rudeness to work with the best surgeons in the city (possibly the country).

I chose Dr. Kurian, i hear good things about her. Anyone use her?

thanks

its the ins company, even it they SAY they don't rquiet just say you did it or tried. the dr. just has to say that you have been tring to lose and what diet you are doing to lose

NYU is great Dr. Ren the BEST

I felt i had excellent care at NYU,

they were right on top of things, they were very attentive to my needs as well as my family.

When the top surgens in the county are working on you they want only the best things said about the hospital they work in.

had mine on 3/3/08 Dr. ren

WOW! I thought I might be the only one who thought the staff was rude! I bet they have tons and tons of phone calls daily from people who ask all kinds of questions and alot of no-shows from people who are not fully commited to getting banded. I mean, for that reason, I understand why they wont schedule any appointments prior to the completion of the prior neccessary step, but I thought it was ridiculous that while I was in the office waiting (and waiting, and waiting...) to be seen by the nurse and nutritionist they would not let me schedule my consultation. I mean, really I was there for my nutritionist and nurse appointments what was going to happen? I guess it will be all worth it in the end to be able to have Dr. Fielding as my surgeon.

As I mentioned I will see him in 2 days.I will let you know how it goes. In the past year I had 2 major surgeries at NYU and I was very happy with the staff. The nurses are all caring and take good care of you. That is why I inqiered about thjis surgery there. Then my friend works the OR and insisted I use this group. Fielding in particular.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
