I have been thinking of Lap Band for a while now because I am slowly creeping up in weight. Well I decided to do it and told my family. But I never imagined the resistence I would get. One relative asked me why would I want to butcher myself!, another relative who is a fitness instructer who's spoon she eats with is thicker than her said that I should stop stuffing my face and excercise and forget about trying to take the easy way out, my mother in law said why do I want to do this as it is a waste of time and money and wont work. And other relatives just say I am putting my health in risk as this can be harmful to myself. My wife was even skeptical but finally said she would support whatever decision I make.

Well I no longer give a crap in any way what anyone feels about what I do  If I am butchering myself then I look forward to being butchered lol. I am 25 5'9 and 258 lbs and I am tired of being so tired all the time and so big. My insurance will cover all but 150.00 and I went to the seminar and went to the first doctors visit on Tuesday of this week and he said I was a good canidate and said this would be a great idea. I am doing this for my own health, and I want to be around to see my 7 month old daughter graduate college and get married and to teach her children things to annoy her

I just say yup to anyone who thinks I am making a bad decision lol. But the last laugh will be when I reach my goal weight. The doc asked me if I was sure I wanted this and I told him I would jump on the operating table if he would do it right then as the operating table was in the same building. He said it sounds like you done your homework and your ready.

I just have to go through insurance now and I will be set to go!

Congrats on your decision. I ran into a few people who think this is a bad idea. I just let them have their opinions. That's why I decided to keep my surgery provate. My Parents and few close friends know - that's it. I don't want wanybody's bad vibes and then there's always that one person that will tkae it upon themsleves to find out every negative thing they can about your procedure just so they can report it back to you! hang in there. See ya in Band Land!

Mike,

First of all, congratulations for putting your self first. Second, you know you are really ready for this surgery and you are doing it for the right reasons when it does not matter what anyone else things or says. You are the one who will have to do the work so it has to be for you and your health. Not that you doing it for your family is not important and it is very important for your spouse to be in your courner. My DH is my biggest cheerleader. When I was at the point you are at now, I hated the questions so much that I decided to only tell a few members of my family and I made them promise to not tell anyone else. I did'nt even tell anyone at work about the surgery. I have not regretted that at all, I figure it is none of their business.

Good luck and God speed with your journey.

Laura

Congratulations on your decision.

My only regret is that I didn't do this years ago.

"The easy way out" !!! My pet peeve.

Just for a moment, lets assume it is the "easy" way. What is wrong with that. Why do it the "hard" way. What is the virtue in struggle? Especially when there is an alternative.

Is it more virtuous to wear glasses instead of contact lenses?

How is it a waste of money if your insurance is going to pay all but $150.00??? Tell that person you will save that the first week off the grocery bill! LOL

Mike, I was just banded the first of the month. I'm 56 years old. I wish I would have had this option much sooner than I did.

Hang in there, get healthy, and let the nay sayers stew in their own juices. :bolt:

I am so sorry you are surrounded by so many ignorant people who want to kick someone when they are already down! But the best revenge is success, and so I think you should start planning for that! You are right... only you can make this decision. Those who don't think it's a good idea should pray they are never in the place where they need weight loss surgery. Keep your head up, go through the process and do exactly what your doctor tells you to do and next year at this time you will be on your way to a slimmer healthier you and they will all shut up! And you won't even need to say "I told you so" because your skinny new body and radiant health will say it all for you!!!

You go! Are we relatives? My friends are furious, especially the ones with weight problems themselves, they say I am being lazy. We'll see who's laughing when I am healthy as can be!! If you ever need someone to talk to, I'm here...Who is your insurance?

Congrats on your decision!!

I remember when I told my grandmother (She came and helped with my 1 year old daughter after surgery), she saw that I'd lost 25lbs on the pre-op diet and thought that proved I could lose the weight on my own. I had to explain to her, yeah- I can lose weight (never all of it) but I always gain it back and usually more. I've only told a small handful of people. Most are very supportive. But the people who aren't..... oh well..... they aren't me so it doesn't matter.

I love the lapband as a tool. It has helped so much. Everytime I want to give up and cheat- and I have cheated- the band keeps things from going out of control. And it's exciting to think that when I do reach my goal I have a tool to help me stay there.

Anyway- best of luck to you and your lapband journey!!:biggrin2:

Hang in there Mike. Don't let anyone tell you that you are taking the easy way out. Obesity is a disease, and you need a tool to help you. There's no shame in that! Plus, who said the Lap-Band was easy? :bolt:

When I started trying to get approved about 3 years ago I told everyone I was thinking about it. I did get lots of negative reactions and when I finally accepted that I was going to have to pay for it myself I did it without telling the people who had negative things to say before. I had surgery 3 1/2 weeks ago and when I started telling some of those people that I had it, I think they realized I didn't need or want their opinions.

Yeah, it amazes me how many people think this is "the easy way out." As if I'm not carefully measuring my food, tracking my nutrition, and out there sweating the pounds off. :bolt:

A good reason to keep this private or only tell people you know will be supportive. Good for you that you just blow them off. "Thanks for your concern."

Congratulations on your decision, Mike. There are a lot of us on here who have chosen to keep the surgery a secret because of reactions exactly like the ones you got. Good for you for standing up for your health and future. Good luck!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.

Lost my Pup last month and struggled really hard for that first month. Stopped tracking intake and slid into old habits here and there. Also quit working out. Can't walk in the neighborhood because of all of the memories we shared. Losing my Pup is the most heartbreaking thing I've ever been through. My Pup was my world 💔
Talked to my doc during my one year followup and they were not worried about my current status. They know, and I know, that I will get back on track.

I'm so sorry. I lost my pup (Mr. Bitters - a chocolate Pomeranian) 2 years ago and it still makes me tear up. He was my everything - my constant companion. I understand. Do the best you can to get back on track.
