Eating with unfilled band vs no band at all

Recommended Posts

A similiar question was asked in another post but I wanted to hear from others so hear goes...

I hear people say that before their first fill that they want to eat everything in site. I'm wondering...

Do you feel the same unfilled (as no band at all), or do you still have to eat small bites and chew, chew chew or can you eat pretty much the same way as you did before the band. I'm asking this to people who have no restriction when they''re unfilled.

I do feel full faster...I think? I can still over eat. I try to make better choices but it is hard!

I have my first fill on the 17th of April...I will keep you posted.

Do you have to chew and chew and chew and take tiny bites or can you eat pretty much like you did pre-band, just a little less?

I think that depends on the person (everyones stomach walls are different) The band..different bands give different amts of restriction without a fill and wether or not the Dr put any fill in during surgery. For me, I could eat just as I did before surgery until I had my 3rd fill.

To get an honest answer to your question you would have to ask people who's stomachs were just like yours, had the same surgeon and got the same band. There are also other variables that can cause temporary tightness such as stress, flying, TOM, salt intake, dehydration etc. So, there is really no right answer to your question. Sorry

Several weeks after surgery once all the swelling had gone down and before my first fill I was able to pretty much eat anything, and yea I pretty much did..lol. I was kinda worried cause I thought, "what the heck did I do to myself and it's not working"

For example I could eat pizza, but honestly, I think I may have had some restriction just from the band alone cause the difference was that before where I may have eaten two or three slices I was only able to eat one. After one I felt kind of uncomfortable. I did chew alot more though--was just kinda leary of screwing up the band. But I was able to take big bites like I did pre-band.

Currently I am three days post fill and I can feel it, that turkey dinner full feeling after eating a cup of Soup. It kinda feels now like it did right after surgery when I still had all the swelling.

I posted in your other thread - I feel exactly the same as I did before surgery. I never had any swelling after surgey either. My scars are the only proof I have a band - who knows, it might not even be in there - lol.

I do not have limitations on the type of foods I can eat and I do not have to take small bites & chew well or eat slowly.

I do think I get full faster but that might just be because I've lost so much weight.

I felt full faster right after surgery but after about two weeks I could eat exactly the same as before being banded. It was FRUSTRATING!!! But patience payed off and it has been worth it. Restriction is the key. Get your fills!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
