How much help at home after surgery?

Recommended Posts

I'm wondering how much time my husband should take off work after my surgery. We're you able to take care of yourselves a few days after surgery?

I just had my surgery on 3/31. I live alone and don't have anyone staying with me after the surgery. Although my brother and his family do live next door. I've been doing fine by myself. And I've been able to take care of my dog and cat. It's been pretty easy. It's not like I have to prepare myself meals or anything. Very easy to do the liquid diet on your own with no help. Good luck.

My husband took the day of and the day after surgery off is all.....

I don't have small kids at home, so that wasn't an issue.

I probably would have been okay the day after, but it was nice to know that someone was here if I needed them.

My husband took the day of my surgery and the day after off. I ended up feeling so good that he went back to work the day after my surgery.

my mom stayed with me the day of surgery, and left about 5 pm the day after surgery. I could have taken care of myself the day after, but it was nice to know that someone was there so I didn't have to keep getting up for every little thing. She also did my laundry for me. Moms are great!

It took me 2 days before I could sit up and get out of bed on my own...tore my stitches in the hospital the first time I tried to get up. You will also likely be on liquid vicodin and sleeping alot the 1st day or so, so it's nice to have someone around to remind you to drink Water or fix your broth. I stayed with my parents for 4 days after my surgery b/c the pain medicine made me so drunk feeling. Plus like everyone says its nice to be taken care of!

I had a friend stay with me day of surgery. I was alone after that while my husband worked. My doc did prescribe vicadin (pills not liquid) but stated that most of his patients are fine with just ibuprophen. I also went on a 14 hour car trip and spent a week running around with family three days after surgery. Of course I was exhausted and sore when I got home. I think it depends on you indivitually. But most seem to be alright after a day or two.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
