What worries you (or worried you) about getting banded?

Recommended Posts

I'm worried the most that they will eventually discontinue the AGB for some reason or another. I say this b/c of all the other types of bariatric surgeries that were performed, but are not anymore (ie. VGB banding, stomach stapling, etc.). The AGB is the next thing since sliced bread now, but will that fade away like the others? ;)

I'm also worried about the problems I may have with the band and that I'll want to yank it out of my body.

Now, of course, these are just concerns and won't make me not get the band. It's just something for me to worry about.

What are (were) your concerns?

Well, to be totally honest....I did worry quite a bit that I wouldn't be able to enjoy the foods I love. And there is quite a list of things i can't have right now because I am very tight. But I expect to someday be able to loosen it up and enjoy just about anything once again. The upside is that food has lost a lot of importance for me... and that is a very good thing.

I worry about several things.

1. What if it doesn't work for me? Failure again.

2. Reaction from others. (I keep telling myself I'm not doing it for them)

3. What about extra skin when I lose all this weight?

I am worried about saggy skin, but not as much as I was a few days ago. I figure...it's my current and future health we are dealing with here. If I really can't stand the skin I'll do a little nip tuck. I can't afford it, but maybe my mom will "buy" me a tuck for Christmas. :frown: She got me Lasik eye surgery two Christmas(es) ago. Think it will fly? :tt2:

That would be an awesome Christmas present. I'm going to want by boobs put back where they belong. After nursing 2 kids and eventually losing all this weight I figure they will be down to my belly button

I haven't had my band put in yet (April 18th.) But I am kinda worried about how long it will last. I assume it's kinda like breast implants, they are there until you don't want them or well... until ya go. Any thoughts?

I think this is what I worried about most, and also whether I'd fail yet again.

I still worry about losing my band, especially if I lose it while I'm maintaining at goal weight. Insurance isn't going to cover re-banding or another WLS if I'm at a reasonable weight, and I sure as heck don't want to be stuck in that horrible cycle of diet/gain/diet/gain ever again.

Oh well. I'm taking my chances and being careful with my band!

The band is supposed to be there for life unless you elect to have it removed or it has to be removed. But that's exactly what worries me...NOW they say it's forever, but what about 5+ years from now? Will statistics show the same?

I am in the same boat. I am getting banded in a week (4.9) and I am freaking out a little today. I am doing my pre op diet and concerned that becasue it is so hard, what will life be like after the band. WIll I really be able to change my eating habits? Will I love it as much as everyone else seems to? I thought about just trying to do it myself one more time but I have been doing that for many years and I just need to get off this yo-yo! I know in the long run this will be a great thing, I just love to cook and obviously eat and I don't want to feel like an outsider for the rest of my life...

It's very hard for me to imagine being 100 pounds thinner... I'm stuggling with the pre-diet also, I HATE YOGURT! And I'm trying to quit smoking. Let's just say...I'm not very pleasant to be around this week. lol.

But thanks for the answers on band life. I think that it is possible they might change their minds in the future about how long it lasts, but at least they've been preforming this surgery for awhile. I would be really freaking out if they had just started doing it.

I think the two hardest things are going to be giving up carbonated diet drinks, and not drinking while I eat. Giving up the carbonation will probably not be so bad, but not drinking will--I wash everything down when I eat!

I am going to my surgical consult on 4-21 and am worried about losing weight to where I don't qualify if I have to be on a 6 month diet. And for after the surgery I am worried will I fail again? Can I really lose over a hundred pounds? Vomiting and PBing and slippage and erosion. All that loose skin. Can I afford plastic surgery? A lot to worry about. But I have made up my mind. I am going to do it. I read through these posts and it seems we all have about the same worries. I love the people here. It's so great to know you are not alone. Good luck to all of you in your journeys.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
