6 days post-op...itchy port...

Recommended Posts

I couldn't find a thread that could answer my question. I'm 6 days post-op, and my port is really itching. It's still a little sore, but mostly itchy. I am assuming it's just in the healing process, but I just wanted to see if there were other people that had itchiness too!

I was banded on the 28th and by Monday I am itchy too! I go to itch and I am bruised so then it hurts or since the Steri Strips have all come off, I rub a scab and think I am making the scar worse. My main incision is bigger than i thought about 4 inches to the left of my bellybutton, but the other ones are TINY! Who knows maybe there is a bikini in my future!

I haven't been banded, so I definitely can't speak from that experience. I DO , however, have very sensitive and often itchy skin. As soon as I scratch I get welts and red marks, so I was forced by my mother to not itch as a child.

Instead I learned how to tap. I know tapping hard on the port might be a bad (or painful) idea, but if you firmly tap repeatedly you can confuse some of those nerves around the port and they won't itch anymore. Hope this helps for you. After about 15 years of practice I'm finally starting to NOT scratch !!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
