Start running?

Hi everyone, I had surgery 3/19 and have lost 14lbs. I have mainly walked 2 miles 4 times a week and want to increase my activity to start running again.

When did people start more streneous excercise after their surgery? I tried to run for a minute or so the other day and got dizzy. I don't want to push it too soon but the loss has already help increase my energy level and want to get back to running.

You may want to follow the Couch to 5K plan provided in a thread earlier... It breaks down each week on how long to run and jog and walk... It seem like alota people have been doing good with this type of plan and you can always slightly modify it to your body or endurance.

I been at it for month and half and getting in good long jogging strides and soon enough im sure i can do whole 5k with no walking... ;p

hi, congrats on your band.

running is higher impact, so you may want to ask your surgeon about that specific activity.

if they clear you, we have a new couch to 5K thread going, come join us! :lol:

I did the couch to 5k a few months back but stopped at week 3. Now that I have this new energy and motivation I hope to finish it.

I just want to make sure Im not pushing it.

I exercised the next day after surgery but it was mild - walking. It would have been 2 or 3 months before I started running. Take it easy, there's plenty of time and if you feel well when you do it you're more likely to continue, so dont push if you're not up to it yet.

Banded or not banded when you start exercising you have to start off slow. Let's say you're a male and you weigh 350lbs, even if you aren't banded it will be really difficult for you to start jogging right off the bat if you haven't been exercising consistently. I know a few people from football who can do this but they've been working out a long time.

I would reccomend walking on a treadmill (less impact) and gradually moving to powerwalking. Once you are able to powerwalk for long periods of time you can give jogging a try. 3 months or 50 lbs is what I would reccomend to the 350lb male but only if he really really wanted to jog. Powerwalking will consistently keep his heart rate up and allow him to lose just as much as weight (if not more) than short bursts of jogging.

Now once you get close or to your goal weight that's a different story.

When I started running over 2 years ago, I did a very modified C2K (meaning I skipped weeks here and there, and really did my own thing to a degree)

(I will use my DH as an example because he started running far more recently than I did) After close on three years of "power walking", my DH started running just before Christmas, we tried the C2K on him... He didn't do well with the structure. He needed to be able to do his own thing, so we ran for a s long as he could, then walked till his heart rate dropped, then we ran again, then walked, then ran again, till there was no walking in there at all.

He says it really helped him to have someone there to keep him motivated when it got rough. So perhaps you could try to find someone to run with when you are ready to start running?

      Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

      The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

        Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
