I'm so tired of the question "Can you eat this?"

Recommended Posts

I am so sick of people asking me what I can and can't eat. I know they mean well but really. My mother is probably the worst and she is super supportive but I keep telling her not to worry about it and just cook what she wants to cook and I will eat what I can. She cooks healthy all the time so I don't have to worry about calories and I've told her that there is very little that I can't eat.

Someone at work came in my office and saw me eating a Hormel Kid's Spaghetti & Mini meatballs and asks me if I can even eat that much food. I told her I could probably eat 2 of them. I know she is really curious because she has been to the seminar and wants the surgery.

I know they mean well and I just needed to vent a little.

What questions about Lap Band are tired of hearing?

Yeah, I know what you mean.. how about "how much have you lost now?" I get asked this at least 3 times a day. Or people have to tell me about their attempts at losing weight all the time now. "I've been walking" and "I got back on the SB diet". It's like they are trying to compete with me. I dunno.. it's weird. People who know treat you so much different that's for sure. I also get asked "what can I eat" too, but only when going out with another couple or going over to somebody's house ..

I'm sick of the same thing you are. At Thanksgiving and Christmas my family was asking me a bunch of questions, and offering to make special food for me....

I totally wish I'd not said anything about my surgery to them. I always make sure I have a backup plan in those cases, and I wish they would just not worry about it. It's not like I'm not capable of taking care of myself, thank you very much.

And I'd rather not have to educate them about it, either. For example, before a fill, I can eat, let's say, a whole chicken breast, grilled, a few veggies, and maybe a little potato salad or something. The next time, after a fill, they'll have the same thing, only, now I can't do the grilled chicken breast because it's too dry, and then they make a big deal out of it because I bring a can of tuna or chicken to make salad with instead of trying to eat the dry chicken which I KNOW will cause me misery if I do that. They start in saying that they could have made something else so I could have what they're having.... I don't know how to convey to them that my surgery is about ME changing MY life, not everyone around me making sacrifices for me.

Can't win for losing, sometimes. Sorry for the rambling...

"What kind of surgery did you have? By-pass? That means that you can't eat anything?" No lap band I can eat what ever I want only less... I say this atleast 3 times a day. I used to talk all the time about what I did and now I just keep my mouth shut. Still very happy that I did this for me though.

Any question in the third person - 'can he eat wafer thin ham?', 'what does he feel like?' etc

I hate people that ask " Should you be eating that?". They seem to think that since you have had the surgery you can't eat anything.

Eating together is such a social behavior. I would be so bummed out if I cooked something and my grown child couldn't eat it. I think it's an inclusion issue. When you change your life it affects all those who are around you and especially those who love you.

The onyl question I don't care for is, "How much have you lost?" I just think that generally speaking that's a tactless question to ask. I don't ask them how many pounds they weigh, why would anyone ask me how many pounds I've lost. Oddly enough, I've volunteered the information many times. I don't mind sharing it. I mind when I'm asked about it. There are two people in particular who ask every time they see me. I actually tryt o avoid them. "Looking good, how many is it now?" That's not a band thing though, I've been that way with every means of losing weight.

I understand that, but these aren't my parents, they're my in-laws, and we've had this conversation AD-NAUSEUM. I didn't mind at first, but then I realized this is the way it will be until the end of time, so I'm over it.

I'm also sick of hearing from a morbidly obese friend who can't afford the surgery and would have to be self pay that she couldn't handle having all the problems I have.

What problems??? Some days I'm tight, so I eat mushies. SO WHAT? That's not what I consider to be a problem. Hell, I LOVE eating refried Beans for supper, it means I don't have to cook! DH makes burritos out of what I have left...

One time I was really bruised after a fill, and I accidentally bumped it with my purse, and she made another comment like that about it. Which really kills me because I think if her insurance would pay for it, she'd be all over it. She is just trying to convince herself that she doesn't want or need the surgery, and I get that. What I don't get is why she has to say that stuff TO ME. I have had relatively few problems, and she's constantly acting like I'm always having issues.

You know, I actually like this question.. and frequently abuse it.

If I don't want to eat something, I can blame the band now.

I am a picky eater (amazingly). A good example--I was reminded of it recently--.. My g'parents in florida, we visited for x-mas.. g'ma made lo mein or chow mein or something with crispy noodles and dog food meat. It's my dad's favorite dish- his mom.. and he's a big baby, so he told me 'You WILL eat it, you WILL NOT complain to her'.. one of those kind of situations. Well, I'm banded! So I brought a can of campbell's Soup, which in the past I could never have pulled off, I would have had to eat a couple bites of the nasty stuff to appease everyone (yeah, I am a grown woman..). So I brought my soup, and told her.. due to the band, I can't eat uhm.. lo mein. No feelings were hurt, and I didn't have to torture myself. She was visiting a couple weeks ago and asked me "Can you eat normal food yet?". Hehe! I didn't know what she was talking about, then she reminded me of xmas. Ho hum.

Haha that made me laugh. (And I'll have to remember that one  )

That's funny bc I am so sick of people NOT asking me what I can eat. Like my family around the holidays....didn't even take into consideration my dietary restriction. But, in all honesty I probably prefer it that way. I don't like people to make a big deal over me.

I don't mind "How much weight have you lost" what I DOOOO mind is when I am eating with my family or friends and I make a plate (a salad plate) and they say. "Dont make yourself sick" I know how much I can eat thank you.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
