SanDiegoPhotog 0 Posted March 31, 2008 I am new to the board -- I have my psych eval and consult this upcoming week -- but I went to my doctor's informational seminar and, this may sound dumb to some, but was it hard to give up carbonated beverages forever??? I am a die-hard Diet Coke addict. I drink it in the mornings, at night, all throughout the day. I don't have a lot of friends in this world, but something about drinking a Diet Coke always makes me feel better. Weird! I know! I am really excited about the band and I'm ready to kick my Diet Coke habit once and for all . . . After the seminar, I decided to quit even though who knows when my surgery will be. I wanted to stop drinking soda on MY terms, as MY choice, so I couldn't have any negative energy or ill-feelings towards the "BAND" being the reason I don't drink it. Funny, I'm not as concerned about missing food as I am about missing soda. Am I alone in this? :cursing:
deehoney 0 Posted March 31, 2008 I'm a big big Diet Dr. Pepper freak and it's gonna be super tough for me to quit as well. I head to my seminar on Saturday and then back to the docs the week after to discuss moving forward. I'd like to hear also how other people kicked the soda habit. Funny, I'm not as concerned about missing food as I am about missing soda. Am I alone in this? :crying: I love coke...regular, plain ole coke. BUTTTT I hate being fat. So the choice is do I drink my cola or change my lifestyle? What I have started doing (per my doctor) was weaning myself off the pop. I am down to 2 a day...next week it will be 1 per day then 1 every other day...until I am done. It is hard, but I want this so bad. I don't have a surgery date as of yet, but I am working on my pre-op stuff!! Tonya, IL
HarleyGirl 1 Posted March 31, 2008 I was like you.....had a diet coke pretty much all of the time. I gave them up three weeks before my surgery. I've been off almost two months now....do I miss it? Sort of, I guess.....but I've found that it was mostly just the habit of having something to drink. I've replaced that with a water bottle or a bottle of propel and it's all good. Really, it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be.....the anticipation was worse than the event.
WhisperLightly 0 Posted March 31, 2008 I've never been much of a pop drinker... sure I had a can like once a day, but I never really craved it.. From what I've heard, though... it's not as hard as you think. And after awhile of not having it.. if you try it, it will taste syrupy and gross and you'll be like 'why did I ever like this stuff in the first place?' Good luck to all of you!! realmccoy 0 Posted March 31, 2008 I was a big diet coke and Mt. dew person........I had no problem switching to crystal light instead. I did miss it at first and even had a few sips and still do have a few sips occasionally, but the carbonation kills me! I burp, feel bloated and want to PB......so it's easy for me to stay away from it!
jtag10_4 2 Posted March 31, 2008 That has been the HARDEST for me to give up. When I read online that pop would not be allowed - it was a small price to pay for a healthy lifestyle. But, I have dreams of diet pepsi, I am afraid I will sleepwalk down to 7-11 and put my head under the fountain drinks! Have not tired the pop flat yet, hopefully it tastes awful and I will never want it again...iced tea is a poor substitute, but a substitute.
*susan* 1,709 Posted March 31, 2008 I thought it would be so tough to give up diet coke, but it really wasn't. I used to drink at least 6 or 7 a day. But, I tried it once since getting banded, and I couldn't stand the taste, texture, or anything.
GreenChrysalis 1 Posted March 31, 2008 I wasn't a huge soda addict, but I did have at least 2 Diet Cokes (or Diet Dr. Pepper, Diet Mountain Dew, et cetera) a day. I was sure I would miss that terribly. I decided to stop them when I started my pre-op diet, which was 2/4, so I'm coming up on two months without soda. And honestly, it hasn't been that bad. I do crave it sometimes, especially since DH drinks almost nothing but diet soda. But it's firmly in my mind that the potential problems aren't worth it, so I just do without. I drink mostly Water. If I really need flavoring, I go for Crystal Light, tea with Splenda or a mix of juice and water. I find it harder to go without drinking while eating...I watch the clock after I eat so I know when I can get something to drink!
Maya314 0 Posted March 31, 2008 I have the same love affair with Dr Pepper, I'll actually drink anything carbonated, I would have a 32oz drink for Breakfast another for lunch... and another for dinner, I realized my addiction and I gave it up a year ago, if I had known that I would have to give it up for the band.. I would have waited! But I'm in agreement.. it's a small price to pay for a smaller butt!
jrg1979 0 Posted March 31, 2008 I really thought giving up Dr. Pepper would be the hardest part of being banded. I have tried many times to quit them on my own in the past, but never stuck it out because I would actually go into withdrawals if I did not have them. The night before surgery I got the biggest Dr. Pepper I could find and drank every drop of it. The next few days after my surgery, I had bigger pains than my DP withdrawals, so I really did not even notice. I am proud to say that as of today I have not had a DP in over 6 weeks. I would be lying if I said I did not crave them once in a while, but I am no longer an addict and HAVE to have one. In fact, I took a small sip of my boyfriends the other day and it did not even taste good to me any more. Go figure?
Brandy~ 2 Posted March 31, 2008 Thankfully I am not a huge fan of soda. I would drink maybe 1-2 a day. However, since I started on this journey I started carrying water/crystal light with me at all times so I never have a reason to get or order a soda. When I am out to dinner I use the crystal light to go packs.
destiny79 0 Posted March 31, 2008 my Dr. allowed me to drink soda, his rule is if it don't hurt then its okay but I don't drink soda for other health problems with me kidneys
fireatak 0 Posted March 31, 2008 I did not have a problem. Cystal light or Water is fine. Thought I would get withdrawl headaches but did not. I think the bubbles would hurt a little anyway.
