What is this discomfort?

Recommended Posts

:cursing: I am 4 weeks post op and I started on solids last week - slowly. I have had this pain between my ribs sometimes when I eat. It usually only lasts 10 seconds or so. Does it mean that something is getting stuck there? If I take a drink it seems to help. I also get "throat pain" (I call it) in the back of my throat sometimes after I eat. Is it gas pains? I have never had gas before surgery, but I seem to have a lot now. I feel like I want to burp all the time after I eat. Has anyone else had this problem? My chest and back feels tight a lot of the time, what can I do???!!!

I never had pain between my ribs. To answer your question, when you eat food it doesn't go into your ribs, so no - it's not something getting stuck there. No idea what the pain in your throat is. Burping after eating is very common. Not sure why you feel tight. Restriction is often described as "pressure" but I don't know that I would ever use "tight" to describe it.

If you're feeling sensations that are concering you or making you uncomfortable, your best bet is to check with your surgeon. We can guess all day, but it's just that.

I have that throaty pain too sometimes. I know what you're talking about. It's not like this really bad severe pain, just like this light light dull pain. Not sure what it is.. I just live with it. I think I get it mostly when I'm hungry. And it's not that painful that I can't deal with it either.

I would talk to your doctor, but i actually think it may be gas escaping from the band. I had this for weeks after surgery.

Because they open your stomach it lets the air in and this hurts to buggery, walking helps.

Still, talk to your doc

I have been experiencing the same pains for the past couple of months. It is like pressure/pain from your breast bone all the way up to your throat. I believe it is food getting stuck. If it doesn't cause a pb/slime episode then it eventually passes. Today it did not pass for me at all. I went almost 10 hours in terrible pain and then decided to go to the ER for an unfill. It was instant relief and I am so glad I went. Be careful and talk to your surgeon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
