Greetings,

I am turning 40 in a few months and finally decided that I don't want to live the 2nd half (+more I hope) of my life having to undergo the constant struggle of losing and gaining weight. I have a consult/evaluation appt this Wed through the New Program in Long Beach/Newport Beach. I know over a dozen girlfriends who had the gastric bypass, but I am hopeful that the lap band is the right decision for me.

I am 5'4" with a BMI of 39.4...am told that I need a BMI of 40 to qualify - so oddly enough I have spent the last few days not worrying so much about the food I am eating. I think it is absolutely ridiculous that 2 lbs might keep me from qualifying for this surgery.

Glad that I found this forum...am looking forward to reading more stories from real people who are willing to share their experiences. Thanks ~ Tai

Welcome to LBT - it is the greatest site for info & support.

We are the same height but I think my bmi was like 42 and I had some co-mobities - it all depends on your insurance. I love my band - I love me for finally understanding that my prior way of eating wasn't normal -

The band is a great tool - but that's all it is - you are going to have to learn to make a lifetime lifestyle changes in your eating - we still absorb our calories where bypass pple don't - so for us we really have to learn to eat healthy - we don't get sick if we eat sugar and it slides right thru our bands (easy to eat even when you have restriction) where as hard Proteins like meat - fish - chicken don't slip thru - you feel full alot faster with the band - but that's once you have proper restriction -

Read - Read - Read all the thread here - you will gain tons of knowledge.

Good Luck on your journey

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
