Hi,

My husband found this site for me and I have been reading like crazy. Thank you all for posting your progress so those of us waiting can know what to epect. I'm 42 and have had it with losing and then gaining what I lost plus some. My family is split on me having the surgery. My parents forbid me...lol (I'm a married mother of 4 and my parents forbid me gotta love it) But when it comes down to it they will support my decision. Weight has been such a huge part of my life and my whole family. A few weeks ago I was with all my sisters and we talking about the surgery, then they started talking about how much they lost, what they do to loose weight, then it dawned on me, everytime we are all together, it eventually gets around to our weights. We have all lost only to regain. I'm tired of it. I"m tire of loosing weight only to gain it back. Dr. cannot get my thyroid under control so thats just another thing against me. So I started my process last aug. I researched the best surgeons in my area. I went to ones seminar and had a consult with the other. They were both highly recommended but I went with the one who is affliated with RI hosp. the other hospital just skeeves me out, it is so old. I have had all my testing. My pshyc didn't go as I had hoped but he will be signing off on surgery 4/3. How long after you had all your testing were you scheduled for surgery? Sorry for the long post, thank you for all your information I"ve enjoyed reading everything so I know what to expect.

Kim

Thank you for the replies. I am hoping my surgery will be at least by the end of the month or very beginning of may. I passed my sleep study which everyone thought for sure I was going to fail. My nutrition appointment was the very first appt I had, so I think I'm going to make another appt just for a review before luckily my ins will pay for as many visits to the nutritionist as I want so I can take advantage of that.

Dr Roye who is also with RI hospital is doing mine. I wanted Dr. Harrington but he only does gastric bypass. I'm not to thrilled with Dr Royes staff, they can be a little rude but he is great. It was a hard choice between him and Dr Phoul (sp ?) he is out of roger williams and I don't like it there.

Good luck to both of you. Keep me informed of your progress.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
