Why No Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs? I am having surgery on Friday and have not heard about that. What can you take instead?

Because our tiny stomachs cannot handle them and they will eat holes in the pouch. That is what I was told and this is forever, not temporary. I was told tylenol only as well!!

Anti inflamatories are very hard on you stomach. With the pouch they can causes ulcers if the medication sits in the pouch.

NGT's are inserted through your nose and go into your stomach. I do not think they could get one blind through the pouch.

I bought a very simple medic alert Bracelet on eBay for $15. It has "Lap Band, No blind NG tube" on the back and the red sign on front. I bought this for now. There is a smaller cute charm that you can get to put on a charm bracelet.

Hi everybody! Just thought I'd try to help a little.

NG= Nasogastric Tube. Yes, they can get it in without a scope, but it's risky. Your fill level could make it too tight for the tube to pass safely and they could perforate your stomach (which would be very bad...would need surgery)

NSAIDS= NonSteroidal Antiinflammatory Drugs. Just as everyone has posted. They can erode the lining of your stomach and cause ulcers and bleeding. Be aware that the list is lengthy, and if you are taking anything other than Tylenol, you should ask your doctor first! Some NSAIDS are: Advil, Ibuprofen, Motrin, Aleve some prescriptions like Celebrex too (for arthritis and such). Avoid Asprin too...same problem.

Having a medical ID is so important. You don't have to wear it (although that is the first place EMS will look). You can keep something in your wallet, or they have kits that look like large pill bottles you keep in the 'fridge. Inside them is a complete list of contact info, medications, allergies, medical history, etc.

Hope this helps.

~C

I am an EMT, and if/when I get the band I will be purchasing a medic alert Bracelet. :) It helps tremendously when we know the medical history of a patient especially if they are unconscious.

Thanks everyone for the links to sites where they sell them!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
