How long were you out of work?

Recommended Posts

My surgery date is 4/14 and I am on the Protein shake diet. 3 days down, 11days to go. YEAH! My concern is I just took a week of pre-scheduled vacation, back to work for two weeks, then out for two weeks after the surgery. It sounds like everyone is back to work pretty quick. Why is my Doc making me take two weeks? Also, regarding pain....I am a recovering addict; I am wondering will I be able to do it with out any narcotics? I am ok with taking Tylenol. Thanks again everyone for all your support.

The program I am in at Lowell General Hospital (MA) asks that you try to stay out of work any where between 4 and 6 weeks! That is for both lap band and gastric by-pass! Seems like a long time, but they said they require it so you can get adjusted to your new tummy! They have a feeding schedule every one to two hours and said work would get in the way of that.... I was thinking it sounded like a really long time - thank god for short term disability! If everyone feels well by the second week looks like I migh have a couple weeks of nice weather to relax in! aahh!

My doctor didn't specifically recommend it but hinted that it would be a good idea....

I have short term disability that I could take too but I think I would pull my hair out lol

I am scheduled for my banding on May 19th. I also will be out two weeks ish. My philosophy is why would I want to go to work while still moving slowing, feeling sluggish and having to adjust to having only liquids. I work in an office and do a little lifting but lots of running from floor to floor (8 in all). I would rather feel comfortable upon returning to work than feeling like crud.

But I honestly cannot wait until my surgery. I have been thinking about this for two years and finally took the plunge last November and saw the surgeon. Six months later with only two weeks til surgery.

My surgery is scheduled for Friday May 21st. I work night shift at a hospital so I will get off that morning and go straight to the hospital where I am having my surgery and then I will be off until Monday night. So I will have Friday evening, all day Saturday, Sunday and Monday to recover. My doctor says that if there are no complications, I should have no problem going back to work that soon.

I just started my job on April 5th so I am not even eligible for any leave yet. I sit at a desk by myself all night, so I don't have to worry about overworking myself. Also since the atmosphere is pretty laid back in my unit at night, I won't have any problems with sipping on my liquid diet all night. Now if i was working Day shift, it would be a whole different story.

I'm having my surgery on Monday, May 10th and I'm only taking 3 days off. Everyone thinks I'm crazy, but I sit at a desk all day with minimal lifting and walking from floor to floor. But according to my doctor, as long as I don't have any complications, I should be fine.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
