Anyone drink a little water with meals

Recommended Posts

Is there anyone out there who drinks a little Water with their meals? I'm not banded yet, but the thought of no Water with my meals just kills me.

I try not to, but I just have to have small sips (very small) no problems with it yet. I used to down a 16 oz glass of milk or 20+ oz of soda with each meal, so my 2 or 3 very small sips of water is a big improvment and has caused no problems yet.

I asked my Dr. about this as well. He said that the reason for no liquids with meals is because it pushes the food through your pouch and therefore you consume more calories because you do not stay full. He said if I eat my 1/2 cup to 1 cup of food (depending on my restriction level) and I limit myself to that, I may drink with or following my meal. Sometimes I am too thirsty to wait the full 1 hour and sometimes I am able to hold off. When I do drink Water I make sure that I do not eat any more food until my next meal.

For me the hardest time to avoid liquids is at dinner time, but I usually never eat anything following dinner any way so consuming more calories is not a problem for me.

This seems to work for me. I am at a good restriction level now and am consistently losing 1-3lbs per week.

Hope this helps,

Ari

I rinse my mouth with a good swallow of Water after I have eatten, but that is all. It seems to work and stop the need for more.

You just get used to it. Drinking with meals is a habit we establish from childhood on, so it seems necessary. But it's really not that hard, particularly if you drink something right before you start eating. Like Karen said, sometimes swishing your mouth out with Water afterwards gives you the same thing as you are looking for when you drink with your meal.

That said, I've certainly had occasions where I have a glass of wine with dinner - not very often, but once in awhile. I sip at it though, so it probably isn't washing much down.

I think Jachut says she sips Water or something with her meals and it hasn't been a problem.

Not Water, wine, lol.

I dont really pay much attention to when I technically can and cant drink. I dont down lots of Fluid with a meal because as banded life went on and I got more fill, I eventually couldnt anyway. And I never did drink a lot with meals, but I usually have a glass of wine going with dinner and I like a coffee right after I finish eating. I've just carried on with that, and well, yeah I'm 155lb now, so obviously it doesnt always make a difference.

You will find that you may not be ABLE to though and like everything else, what you thought you'd miss becomes quite abhorrent to you when you begin to associate it with discomfort.

Drinking while eating is a learned habit. As long as you are drinking the recommended fluids a day you do not need to drink and eat at the same time. You want to teach yourself to have the food fill you up and not the fluids while eating to help the food pass through your stomach quicker to get hungrier quicker.

Old habits are always hard to break.

I feel that this is the hardest part of being banded. I slipped a few times at the beginning. Now I don't keep a drink at the table, to easy to grab. And I set the timer for an hour after my "meal" (i am still on liquids) so I can resume drinking water/tea.

I was told if you get really thirsty to suck on an ice cube.

A good tip our nurse told me was if we're out to eat, or wherever, to have a glass of ice. She said what melts while you are eating is about the amount you can have.

i drink a little if i can tolerate it. sometimes, it jst doesnt want to work. it kinda makes the food float and feel uncomfortable but others its ok. My surgeon said a good rule is to get a cup of ice and what ever melts while you are eating, is ok to drink. It works for me.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
