I was just wondering how many people had to have lovenox shots after their surgery and how long you had to take them. Thanks!

I had them -- supposed to be for 10 days, was so black and blue and sore I gave up after 5 days. I still am black and blue (well actuall purple now) from the shots after a month. I think my body reacts poorly to it.

I had to stop my Coumadin 7 days before the Surgery and start the Lovenox shots 5 days prior to the Surgery. My last shot of Lovenox was the night of the Surgery. 2 days post op I started my normal dose of Coumadin.

The shots were not an issue for me as I have been an Insulin dependent diabetic and have been giving myself shots since 2003.

I had to take Lovenox shots for 14 days after surgery. I had a history of blood clots from when I had my daughter 3 years ago. So my surgeon put me on Lovenox after my lap band surgery just as a precaution. It wasnt that big of a deal. Just a little prick in the "love handles" every night.

I have no history of blood clots and i don't take Coumadin or any other meds but the nurse who heads the program at the hospital said that I would have to take the shots. (i believe she said for 10 days after surgery) I don't think I will have a problem giving myself the shots I was just wondering if everyone had to take them prior to the surgery. I am one of the first people to have the lap band surgery at this hospital-they have only done the rouxen-y and i know things can be different between the two and sometimes they tell me things that only applies to the roux en-y. I wasn't sure if I had to take them seeing how I don't have the history of clots or anything. Thanks so much for your help!

I met with my surgeon on Wed and he said that I will be taking them for 10 days even though I am a low risk for blood clots. (He asked me some questions and then used a chart to determine that) He said that since he started having all his patients do the shots there hasn't been many blood clots. I think I can handle 10 days, no problem! Oh, I finally got a date set!! I go on the 15th for surgery. I am so excited!!

I think I had one before surgery and then 1 - 2 after surgery. I stayed one night in the hospital and I didn't have to take any shots once I left. All is fine.

I had one shot of heparin right before my surgery and received lovenox right before being discharged from the hospital.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
