Extended Post-Op Swelling

Recommended Posts

I was banded on 3/17 - Monday it will be two weeks - has anyone else experienced ongong post-op swelling? I struggle to get fluids in - my surgeon suggested I just use Isopure and Profect (that amounts to only approx. 300 cal/day)- trying to get both of those in continues to be a struggle, then I have to deal with pressure in the middle of my chest for a couple of hours. I go back to work on Monday and am not looking forward to it at this point.

Hello

I was also banded on 3/17/08! I am experiencing middle of my stomach tenderness all over my leftside of my stomach. I was told by my doctor it is because of all the work was done on that side. I do understand what you mean about the bloating feeling. Mine comes and goes, but work helps me get my mind off of it. I was told this feeling will pass in a few more weeks.

Glad to hear I'm not the only one with swelling on the left side. I can cup my hand over the place where my band is located. I don't know if this was already there post op (March 20) and I couldn't feel it til other abdominal swelling went down, or if this is new swelling since I went back to work (1week, 1 day post op). My advice is don't go back to work for a few more days if you don't feel ready, and especially if you move around a lot at work. My job involves reaching up over my head casing magazines and large envelopes (post office) and all that reaching made my stomach hurt pretty bad for the first few days. Sitting is tough too, unless you are wearing loose fitting pants. The swelling makes the clothes tighter, sitting puts more pressure on the stomach. = more discomfort, swelling. I wish I had taken an extra week off. Take care.

I was banded on 3/18 and I still have pain and swelling especially over the port site. No bloating and the tightness I used to feel when I ate or drank is pretty much gone. Is anyone else dealing with pain where the port is located?

I was banded on 3/17/08 and I don't particularly have swelling anymore but I definitely felt pretty weak for the first 1.5 weeks. I also am still feeling tender around the port area but otherwise am pretty much back to normal.

I too have pain where my port is. Constant pain at a low level with occassional burning. I was holding my hand over my port a lot. I think it was because I sit so much at work. I found myself arching my back....trying to raise my diaphram while sitting. Between my bra and then sitting there's a lot of pushing from both directions on my stomach. That causes a lot of the discomfort. The first couple of days back to work were not pleasant. Now I get up every hour and walk around. That helped. Not wearing a bra helped more.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
