Stomach virus/Food poisoning & the band

Recommended Posts

I'm pre-op, just starting the banding process, but I decided to post this question in post-op as I figure that you guys will be more likely to know the answer.

Once you are banded, I've heard it's bad to throw up. So what happens if you get a nasty stomach bug or food poisoning, and you're continually throwing up all day long for several days? Can that hurt the band? Do you have to make a trip to the doc to have the band unfilled? Just curious. I have a 2 year old, so I usually end up with at least one stomach bug each winter. :)

Thanks!

Many people chose to keep an Rx antiemitic on hand, just in case. In severe cases, several seek unfills.

I chatted with someone last night who had this happen...band slipped and just now got the band back.

When you get the stomach bug, pray you don't vomit. But if you do...go get an unfill immediately! In a week or so, after it's over, you can go back for the adjustment.

This is what I will do if needed as it's easier to get the unfill and go back a week later than suffering, letting the band slip, having it removed, waiting and having it put back in...all that time and money when a simple unfill would have done the trick.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
