prior to surgery i lived for coffee, starbucks was my favorite place to be, and just coffee with cream, no foofoo drinks. if i could have mainlined it i would have. well since surgery i can't handle any coffee weak or strong. i have to mix a tblspn of instant with sf hot chocolate. now my surgeon steers patients away from coffeee due to it being so acidic, but it really is what you can handle, if too acidic you will know. g2s

So maybe because i have no acid problems may be okay for me, but cant handle coke -- and i was a massive massive diet coke fan before.

Slurp, slurp (that's me tapping into the huge mug of coffee next to me as I type). Yep - my nutritionist said to stay away from the stuff just because it "can" be an appetite stimulant, it doesn't do you any favors in the heartburn department and caffeine just plain isn't good for us.

So, after 4 weeks of going cold turkey before and after surgery, I went back to it. Here's how I compromise with my "new brew". I make either Decaf or half caf coffee and limit myself to one large mug in the morning. I put half of a packet of carnation instant Breakfast, a tablespoon of Benefiber and a tablespoon of powdered multi Vitamin in the bottom of my mug, pour in the half caf, and a splash of fat free Creamer. It actually is my Breakfast (since band is usually tight in the morning and does not like heavy food). Here's what it does for me - first, keeps me regular since I've had some post-band stoppage...second, keeps me from feeling deprived in the caffeine area...third, keeps me full til lunchtime with the added inst. breakfast and Fiber.

So far no problems.

Caffiene can irritate the stomach and your hence your band. When I'm tight I don't drink coffee, just because it's like adding fuel to the fire.

When I'm not super tight I drink caffiene daily. Two shots of espresso a day makes me a nicer person. One drink in the morning. Mind you it's a 20 ounce drink, but I don't nurse coffee all day.

IMHO, this is an area where you can make a deal with yourself. While recovering from surgery or when you're really tight stay away from it, but otherwise, if it impacts the quaility of your life, (it does me) work some in.

HTH.

I need a cup or 2 of joe in the AM to as mentioned above, "stimulate my appetite". Sounds weird to do that, but I need to eat breakfast in the morning before going to the gym. I have to have that "fuel", and coffee gets me hungry by the time the first cup is down & allows for me to have my Cereal or oatmeal & fresh fruit.

I use to live on Starbucks latte's and didn't eat till around 1pm...my metabloism was SHOT - no energy, even w/all that caffiene.

It helps me get going in the early hours & I'm a much nicer person for drinking it :).

I have a latte with skim milk every morning. My nut. is ok with it b/c I don't eat breakfast and the skim milk is a good source of Protein. I have never had a problem with the acid.

Every now and again, I'll take down the skinny iced caffe mocha, but RARELY. I do like coffee, but I'm not HUGE into it.

Tea however, is nummy. :)

I drink coffee w/ skim milk every day now. I never want breakfast, so at least I get some Calcium. I drink the strong stuff and it doesn't boter my tummy. But, I still can't drink diet coke.

I drink it every day. The center I go to doesn't have any problem with moderate coffee drinking. Of course, if it causes a particular individual problems like heartburn, that person should avoid it.

I've given up the sweet drinks at Starbucks though -- no grande mocha frappucinos now! A hot cup o coffee with a splash of milk works fine, or a latte if I need the dairy.

I couldnt live without coffee. However I have learned to like instant coffee well enough, I do tend to drink about five cups of coffee a day and if that were espresso, I'd hate to think how much caffeine I'd be consuming. So I tend to have maybe one bought coffee a day, a latte or long black with a splash of cold milk, I really dislike all the fluffy confectionary style coffees on the market these days. And I'd have 2 cups of regular instant coffee in the morning and Decaf for the rest of the day.

We've got a great percolator, makes beautiful coffee but we dont drink it regularly - too strong, we save it for dinner parties etc.

I have a cup of coffee in the morning but I put sugar free creamer or skim milk in it and so far no problems. I do find that I slowly drink my coffee and then wait and have my breakfast shake or whatever Protein I am having so that I don't use coffee to wash out what nourishment I'm taking in.

My surgeon didn't mention anything about not being able to drink coffee. However i feel a bit stomach sick after drinking one cup or more and thus decided to stop.

I have to mention though that it was milk with a bit of coffee and that alone already made me feel sick, so yeah i stay away.

Having a cup of Decaf right now......think it's the first time in MY LIFE I've drank decaf....it's good. I did get some Gevalia Breakfast Blend decaf....and I like it. I just love coffee.

Between my doctor's recommendations (both my band surgeon and my GYN) and talking to my husband's gastro doc, I've decided to eliminate caffeine from my diet....

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
