Reaction from others

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever been scared to tell someone who is naturally thin, about themselves getting the band?

Or have you told and what was the reaction?

I know I shouldn't care what others think of me or base my worth by what they think. And I bet people will be more understanding then you think they will.

I'm getting closer to being banded, I'm down to my last $$ option now. As soon I hear the words "the check is in the mail", I'm calling MX and making a date.

Lots of people think like you do. I didn't tell anyone but hubby. Nobody at work knew. Not even one brother or sister or parent or relative. You can tell them when you are comfortable - it's your body.

I'm a closet banster too, it is just easier that way, everyone isn't asking why you haven't lost this or that! My brother and his family know and that is it! Someday I might tell everyone, but not now.

Oh, and I've lost 70 pounds and my parents still don't know! My mother would hire a dective to find out who did it to me, then she'd go to Mexico and have her way with my surgeon. Some things are better left unsaid to protect everyone.

Jack, I always take the time to explain as well, because everyone always says, Oh, I know somebody that had that done, bla bla bla. Then I automatically start explaining.

I didnt tell my father pre surgery, I didnt want him to worry, but I have told people at work and friends.

I am pretty surprised, I havent had any negative remarks, to my face anyways...

I've kept the secret under wraps. My boyfriend knows, and my boss knows. She is a friend. I told her because sometimes I need to leave work a little early for fills. My mom and sister do not know. I don't think they'd have a cow, but I didn't want them worrying about it. none of my other friends know. For me, it's a private matter.

That's too much family too close to home for me! If they're the type that get in your business and try to run your life, you might consider keeping it private, at least for now. Nobody needs added stress to such a huge decision. The surgery and process is enough to take without added outiside anxiety.

I tell EVERYONE...my family, friends, business clients, people I pass on the street. I have NEVER had a bad reaction to the news. In fact, almost everyone I explain it to thinks it's just the coolest thing and they wish they could have one- even thought they might not have that much to lose.

There is only one small group of friends I did not tell- they are my friends from high school that I get together with once a year at Christmas. Most of them are overweight and pretty sensitive...and I felt that they might feel bad if I told them so I haven't. I'm sure I will at the next Christmas...it's getting hard to hide 63 pounds gone. I just have always been "the fun fat one that makes it ok to be fat" and in some weird way I feel a little like I betrayed them.

Everyone is different. And the people you have around you may or may not be supportive...you probably can tell. Trust your gut...and know that you're making a decision for yourself that will better your life, and sometimes that scares people. You, and they, will get over it...or you'll be living your new life and not have time for such nonsense.

I only told people who are very close to me - a couple of close friends and my family. I wouldn't dare tell my co-workers as I don't think they would be supportive ( I could be wrong). I'd rather not take the chance. I already have lots of support, including you guys whom I have become so close to.

I tell eeeeeeeeeeeverybody who will listen. I think I was so excited to get it done that I just didn't care.

The only people I'm worried about is my dad's family. I told my dad, who told his family (which isn't a problem), but when I go out there for a visit I'm a little worried about what people will say. Some of my cousins have had weight troubles, but they got them under control, and my aunt was always an advocate of eating healthy and watching fat and calories. She often harped on me about my weight.

I guess we'll see what happens, but I don't see them often enough to really care.

:)

I waited till after I made the decision on having the surgery and after I got my date to tell my inlaws cause I knew they would want to HELP make the decision and it is my descion to make and I made it and I'm glad I did. Then I told them and my Mother in law kinda acted pissed cause she wasn't part of the decision earlier before I desicided on my own. I wanted no one to persway me one way or the other. I did tell my husband /mom/dad/and brother. Who have all been very suportive. Every one that I work with knows it and and have been a great suport. I even had one girl I go to lunch with alot ..Say We can start sharing a meal and that way she would be eating less too!! How great is that... Its definatly up to you who you tell. Just follow your heart and know that this is your descion and you should let no one take that from you. You decide and then think about who to tell.

My family knew (my sister had it done 6 months prior and I had her go with me) and my mom. Mom was so happy when I told her she cried (and she's not a cryer like me). My sons knew and were/are very supportive. Only my "other son"....a kid that thinks he's mine questioned me at great lengths and I think still is unsure, but he supports my decision (his new wife was thrilled that I was doing it).

My church family knew. Even the very young, very thin office manager was so excited for me. Pastor was concerned (he's also heavy), but has been supportive.

Only one person at work knew beforehand. I went during winter break so if I chose, nobody had to know. Afterward when they could see I was losing weight, they begged to know what I was doing and I was excited to tell them. They were all very happy for me and very encouraging. I don't tell everybody, but I rarely hesitate when asked...especially if it's somebody I think the band might help.

It's everybody's personal choice and how comfortable you are with it.

Personally I've never really had a negative experience with telling. I did have a couple friends tell me they were glad I didn't tell them until afterward because they would have worried like crazy.

I told my husband, of course and my mom (cause she had to take care of me) and a few friends, but my mom and best friends took it upon themselves to tell others and this I mind. I hate that people know because some of them are too ignorant and make stupid comments and just plain don't understand. I wish I had only told my husband and only him.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
