Anyone out there with PCOS?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I'm scheduled for surgery on 4/7 and was just wondering if anyone could tell me, postops, how they are doing with the weight loss. I know that it has been so hard to lose weight for me for years due to the PCOS. I'd love to hear how much you've lost and how long it took you to achieve those pounds! THANKS!

Hi Jami! I have PCOS too! I was banded 9-20-07 and have lost 76 lbs so far. My weight loss has been pretty consistent but has slowed considerably. For a good bit of my banded journey I have tried to stick to a low carb lifestyle. I just recently switched to a low calorie lifestyle. I just joined the YMCA today and I start with my orientation tomorrow. I hope that exercising on a daily basis will help me get to where I want to be. I still have a long way to go, but I am very pleased with my results so far. Good luck to you.

hi there

i also have serious PCOS and was banded in oct 07. i just had my 3rd fil and 3's a charm for me. the first 2 fills were ok but i think i hit the sweet spot. i have lost 50 lbs now. dont forget that everyone loses at a different rate so you cant really compare. i am thrilled with my personal weight loss and i would never go back! others who were banded before and after me some have lost more or less than me but everyones weight loss is a definite triumph! as long as its comes off!

i really wish you the best!

I'm so glad you asked about this. I am pre-op and had not really thought about how my PCOS was going to affect my weight loss. I was able to lose 40 lbs. when I was pregnant (believe it or not) since I developed Gestational Diabetes and also had twins. They consumed every calorie I ate and I love them so for it! (one was 7lb7oz and the other 6lb11oz so I know they were fed plenty!) But, I gained it all back and then some after they came. I haven't been able to stay on Metformin due to the horrible side affects I was having. They were easier to deal with before, but taking care of 2 infants/toddlers, it just wasn't possible.

It's so good to see a PCOS specific area here. It makes the battle to lose weight so much harder when you have this on top of everything else. I can also see where everyone else does have a different rate of loss. Do they keep people on the metformin after the surgery? How on earth would you take the large pills? How many have noticed the difference in their PCOS symptoms after they lose the weight?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
