I am grateful for the band. As a self-pay I do feel a little guilty about having to spend all that money that could have been put to many other good uses. If only I had better self-control! My DW is totally supportive and I am so fortunate. I have lost 100+ pounds four times in my life only to gain it all back plus more every time. My failures out there for the entire world to see. Talk about demoralizing! Now, for the first time I feel some optimism, hope, even a little confidence that (with the help of my new band friend) I might be able to finally gain control over this area of my life that has always controlled me. Yep-- even though the first few weeks after surgery were rough, I'd do it all over again. Good luck!

Jim- you're being too hard on yourself. I don't believe that the current problem in America with obesity is a matter of self control.

It is obvious to me as a scientist that there are other significant factors going on. A 98% failure rate is a statistical impossiblity if the operating factor is just self control.

I suspect that there are significant physiological changes in our bodies when we eat high fructose corn Syrup or white flour or white sugar. Something happens to make losing weight so impossible. It is not just will power. If it was more people would be successful at losing and keeping weight off.

The recent discovery that cutting into an area of the small intestine cures diabetes immediately after surgery without weight loss tells us that a lot of the knowledge about obesity and the resulting problems are probably wrong.

Reminds me of the theory of ulcers- that stress caused ulcers and the dr's put you on milk etc when it was a bacteria all along. Oops. I think "diets" will be viewed the same way in the future.

So forgive yourself and wait for science to catch up to us. Be glad that you could afford to self pay (and I am thankful for that also in my case).

Love and success to all on our journey.

Sadie

I certainly do not regret getting the lap band.

My sugars was over 300, When I started looking at the lap band after years of losing weight and gaining ten to twenty pounds more I found myself at at a weight of over 317 (317 was my highest recorded weight do not know how much over 317 I actually went) I had to use a CPAP machine. I had pain all over my body.

Know even though for the last two months my weight has been stable I have lost over a 100 lbs. I am no longer am diabetic. I no longer use a CPAP machine. my joints do not hurt.

I have tons more energy and my waist has gone from 46 to 40 inches.

Having loss of feeling in my hands and feet were a major concern as well as numbing in my lips. I also was having trouble with my eyesight. I was also drinking tons of Water and always so thirsty, I also had trouble getting rid of sores on my feet and arms drove me to find a better way of taking care of myself.

As a result I have very little pain if any in my body after living with pain every day for years.

I can relate with being a self pay, and feeling like you are indulging on yourself. I want to get my money's worth, and feel some pressure from my husband to lose, but I just had a slow start until my lap band got filled. Now I am down 21 pounds. Unthinkable before. I am on my way down the scale!

Praise God for the modern technology.....I am so thankful for the opportunity to have another chance at life. I have a few hurdles yet to go before i am approved for surgery, and i had the staple procedure back in the 80's and there just may be too much scar tissue to do the lap band. So i am very much in limbo,....but it is wonderful news that your pain is better.

Best wishes to you and reaching your GOAL!

Mary....Jacksonville AR.

The only thing I regret is waiting as long as I did to do it. If anybody talks to me about lapband and shows a real interest in having it done, I always encourage them to look into it and see if it's right for them and not wait.

I was on 3 blood pressure medications when I had the surgery and now 8 months later and 70lbs lighter, my doctor is about to take me off of the last one! I don't have the aches and pains I had before from all the weight. I can take the heat a lot better than I could when I was heavier. It's soooo much easier and cheaper to shop for clothes now. The band has helped to improve my life so incredibly much and I'm not even at goal yet. Like I said, I wish I'd done it ages ago.

I believe not having the lap band I would be dead by now. I was a 34 year old weighting 475lbs. I felt the lap band was my last hope to live. I can honestly say I was a couch potatoe. I had talk with my aunt about when I died to take my daughters. I knew that I was going to die because of my weight. Well I seen the Lap Band on TV. Went to see my doctor and told him to let me try. This was my last hope. I went through the steps into getting the lap band. The hardest part before the surgery was the clear liquid diet. I went on this diet for 5 days and lost 26lbs. I wa so proud of myself because my doctor told me if I gained one pound before the surgery he wouldn't do the surgery. Well I've had the surgery 4 years ago, I've lost 215lbs to this date. I'm still losing weight till this day. I havent been to the doctor for 2 years and still losing. I lost more weight than the doctor, the personal trainer, and my family thought I would lose. So I recommend this surgery to anyone who has given up hope on losing weight.

I was turned down today for my means of financing the lap band, but im not giving up just yet. They told me that my BMI was too low.....IM 39 and they want me to be 55. I think they should re evaluate the need even at 39 with the co morbidity diseases that go along with it

THERE ARE DAYS I REGRET IT!!!!!Just to let you know it is not a quick fix it is a slow weight loss and sometimes very frusterating is is worth it ? I THINK FOR the most part it is but i get discouraged easy about it i get discouraged that i still can make poor food choices that still enable me from losing weight just like before surgerY i dont know what i expected but it is different you will lose but slowly there is no average i think its just what normal for you so dont go in with any expectations other than living healthy eating healty forever and you will do fine good luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
