Does it hurt to get band filled?

Recommended Posts

Just wondering if it hurts to get the band filled. Getting my first filler 4/15 and looking forward to/dreading it. I hope he numbs up the site first, but does it hurt inside - can you feel it when your stomach gets cinched up? Banded 3/3/08 and still getting used to it.

Thanks

I just had my first fill on Monday. My dr numbed up the area first, then inserted the fill needle. I didn't even feel it. It was very easy, took about 5 minutes.

It's not bad at all. I just felt "pressure". Try not to be scared, you'll be fine, I'm sure!

Good luck

My doctor doesn't numb it, because it's a needle stick for the fill or a needle stick for the anaesthetic, so what's the difference? You don't feel anything inside when they actually do the fill.

No Pain. My doc rubs some numbing stuff on before the fill needle. My port is about 2" below and to the left of my port incision, so the first fill he had to feel around alot to find the right spot to stick me. Now we both know where it is, and he finds the place with his fingers right away, before the poke. I was more scared of the 1st fill, than I was of the surgery! I guess because my daughter was with me for the surgery, and I was on my own for the fill. How silly of me!

my doctor numbs the area first with a small needle i think thats more uncomfortable (not bad at all) than the fill itself. you do feel the doctor pushing the needle around at least i do but it doesnt hurt. good luck, im having my third fill on 4 15 the same day as you. keep us posted on how it went.

I had my 1st fill last week. My Dr. does not numb the area. It just felt like a pinch, no big deal. and all you feel when its being filled is the feeling of fullness. The dr is probably going to tell you to be on liquids the rest of the day and mushies the next, so listen to him/her. I didn't, I had a piece of deli turkey that night and had my 1st PB episode which was very unpleasant.

My first fill hurt like a bitch because I let the doctor numb me and that was not a typical "bee sting" numbing experience. Subsequent fills have not hurt because I have denied the numbing shot.

At no point does your stomach get cinched up. The band gradually tightens around your esophagus, but doesn't impact your stomach or cinch it in any way, nor have I ever felt stomach discomfort as the result of a fill.

It was super easy and painless. I asked if they were going to numb it first, but she said that the numbing shot would hurt worse. She found my port in like two seconds, bam, stuck the needle in, hit it in one shot and the whole process took about 30 seconds from start to finish. You know what it felt like? when she sucked the "starter fill" out it made like this gurgly feeling in there and then like a swooshy feeling when she put it back in with more that she added. But it didn't hurt at all. I don't have a bruise.. no pain.. nothing. Just restriction. The place I go to is amazing! I worried about it so badly, but now that I know what a piece of cake it is, I won't mind going to get these fills every time.

PB is Productive Burp. Its when food comes up from your pouch. I haven't experienced it though, so I'm not sure what it feels like. I did experience a slime the day after I got banded and drank too much.. It was like my mouth got all wet and I felt like I needed to vomitt and then it went away in like 10 seconds, but I've never done the PB thing before.

Yuck, but thanks for the info. Food for thought (sorry).

I PB'ed for the first time like 2 weeks ago. I ate a chicken nugget. and it got stuck. Let me just say when you get something stuck you will know. All the times before when something got stuck it went down fine in a few minutes. this time it stayed stuck. I produced a ton of saliva and couldnt swallow it because of the nuggett being stuck. So I had to spit out the spit. I had plenty of time to get a bag to throw up in. and It is not like normal throw up with the whole acid from your stomach. it is just like you are spitting something out. which you are basically doing. It was just ONE puke and I felt better...I did throw out the nuggets with out trying any more...but I was fine.

Little gross but lesson learned.

No matter how gross, everything learned here is a valuable lesson. That's why I love this site - you hear from people just like yourself who are going through the same thing you are. Thank you for your insight and thanks for sharing. You are awesome!!

Why thank you. Before I got banded everyone had me freaking out about slime and PB until one person explained what it was for me. So I try to do the same...Personally more information is better.

If I know what to expect then it is not so bad.

OH by the way slime is the over abundance of saliva. the stuff you spit out. very gross

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
