Post op problems-- adults only please

Recommended Posts

HI, Was banded yesterday, 12 min. surgery, no problems, no pain, home earliy, took the dog for a walk, no pain killers needed, just great. but one problem.... I couldn't urinate. As the day went on I kept trying but no go. So I called my surgeon (2 hours away) and my PCG. My PCG had me come right in an explained that the bladder can stretch and even rupture if not emptied. So he decided to put a catheter in at the office. Well being a male this was no fun. Put still no urine. Turns out they used a folley catheter during the surgery and it had irritated the urinary system and it had bleed, then clotted causing an obstruction. So the Doc had to use the catheter like a "roto router" and clear out the urinary track to the bladder. Very painful!!!! Then finally relief, a huge amount of urine came out. He sent me home with a catheter and a bag, very uncomfortable and awkward. so the surgery site is fine, I'm sipping Water, no problem, could have gone back to work today, but with this bag and problems... no way.:sneaky:

eek, sounds nasty but glad to hear it's better now though! Yesterday was my birthday and I was really ill with flu etc so we were both feeling pretty rotten on March 25th!

I'm hopefully due to be banded in the next 3 weeks (date TBC) and can't wait.

Let me know how things go with yours, it's good to hear you aren't in any pain as that's what I'm not looking forward to (I had a knee op in Oct 07 and was off work for nearly 6 weeks which was uncomfortable and painful) so I'd not like a repeat of that!

Take care,

Gill :-)

Thank goodness you called the doctor and got it taken care of. I am amazed that they would send you home before you could pee. I had to go 400ccs before they would release me. I guess everyplace is different.

Good luck and I hope you don't have to wear the bag too long.

I had to have my first catheter (outside of when I was an infant) about 2 weeks ago. It definitely had its own unique pain. And oddly enough, I couldn't produce much while it was in, but as soon as she removed it I pottied like a racehorse. Almost like they had forgotten to re-open it after thay had closed it off.

Best of luck being able to wee.

I agree that is weird to send you home with out peeing. I had to spend the night because I couldn't pee and ended up with a catherder also - I thought it would be painful, but I couldn't feel a thing (sorry). My doctor told me this usually doesn't happen to woman!!

Good luck:)

Ugh, you poor thing, that had to have been miserable for you. I am so sorry you had to go through that. And, like others have mentioned, completely perplexed that you were allowed to go home without peeing first. That is very unusual.

Wow, I am sure glad My surgeon doesn't require a catheter. That sounds horrible! Here's to you feeling better soon!

sorry for your complication. Look men get prostates and women have uterus'...even steven...don't think so. It depends on your age as to why this happened. It could also be because it was a traumatic insertion due to an enlarged prostate and you wouldn't have known it if you were asleep. It'll clear up.....and life goes on....congratulations on your surgery. Did you stay overnight? Probably should have...not good to just get surgery and be discharged.

Ok, update..... Two days with the catheter and it came out this morning, started functioning ok 5 hours later, now it's just healing from the banding surgery which is easy compared to the catheter. Walking is really the best way to deal with any discomfort. Thanks for your support.

Wow, my surgery was almost 45mins, not 15mins. and as for peeing they only asked me if I peed, plus they had to help me the first time I wanted to go.

I am glad you are doing better, but I am worried that your surgery took 15mins and you went home same day. Just doesn't sound right to me. Just my opinion, I don't mean to worry you

I had to stay overnight at the hospital. Was this done in a hospital or clinic? Are they a Center of Excellence?

What do fellow banders feel about this? Is it just me???

Hi,

Thanks for the concern, no objection taken. Yes it was a center for excellence, the Dr said about 80% of band patients go home that day. Part of the reason for the quick surgery was I was on two weeks of opti fast only as a pre op. That supposidly shrinks the liver and makes the operation faster. Less time under general is quicker recovery time.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
