dpj00024 0 Posted March 25, 2008 I finally have my date scheduled, April 15th. I’ve been reading through posts though and I’m wondering why my doctor doesn’t have me on a liquid diet pre op? Is that normal? Everyone else seems to be one. Thanks…
Christal 0 Posted March 25, 2008 I wasn't on a liquid diet but a low carb diet to shrink my liver.
MrsCooper 1 Posted March 25, 2008 Dan, My doctor didn't require a pre-op liquid diet either - when I asked him why he told me that they have patients do the pre-op liquids to "shrink" things up inside of you (such as your liver) - he said that he makes an extra incision so that he can move the liver out of the way so the pre-op diet is not necessary. moonshadow2468 0 Posted March 25, 2008 You need to have confidence in your DR. Most everyone here says to contact your Dr. and that's good advice. That way you will build confidence in him/her. With that said this is what I wrote before. I don't want to get anyone with a different opinion mad. I've never heard of a Doc, saying it is BAD to be on a low fat diet prior to Surgery. Some require (like mine) to be on a low fat, all liquid diet. Mostly, it seems to be an issue of the size of the liver. The operation can be done with a large liver. The issue is the ease and time of the operation. If the liver is small, the operation is easier. Now, it seems to me that to some degree the Drs, want to say they have the skill and can do the operation either way... but if it can be easier, less time under general, why not? So is a low fat diet necessary? no. Is it a good idea...... Up to you. I was just banded today! I had a 12 min. surgery!! I'm up and around. Would it have been as easy on me without the pre op liquid diet?????
Chilly 0 Posted March 25, 2008 Congrats! My surgery is also scheduled for April 15th. I also did not have to do a liquid diet, just had to watch what I was eating and to eat healthy to shrink the liver. I hope your surgery goes great. Chilly
VegasGrace 1 Posted March 25, 2008 (edited) Wow, never heard of that. Your doc will ensure you didn't eat at Denny's or McDonalds the day of surgery.... hang in.... your instructions will come in some form. (I only had 2 days of liquids....not weeks like alot of other folks. You may be lucky and just get by with nothing past midnight or something.) Keep us posted! Hastings 3 Posted March 25, 2008 I had a low carb diet that apparently also works to shrink the liver. He said my surgery went very smoothly. I have pictures of my stomach with the band on. errrk.
