I do have one more question for you in Lap band Land: If we are not supposed to eat the more "liquid" type food post band, then why are Protein Shakes okay? Since liquids supposedly go through the band they should not be able to sustain the full feeling that keeps us so happy and therefore encourage overeating.

Some doctors do not want their patients drinking Protein shakes at all after the you complete the post-op diet (which can last anywhere from 4 to 8 weeks depending on your doctor) for the reason you mention. solid food keeps you fuller, longer.

However, some people find themselves tighter in the morning and unable to get down enough solid protein to keep themselves full. So protein shakes can be good for Breakfast. Or if you are feeling tight at any other time and know that you need more protein, then they can be a good way to get it. After a fill you're usually on a liquid or soft diet for a few days, so that would be another time to get a Protein Shake.< /span>

My surgeon allows protein shakes as Snacks if I get hungry between meals because I'm supposed to get 60g of protein a day. But I track everything I eat, and I find that it's not that hard to get that much protein from solid food. I do have one for breakfast occasionally or if I'm pressed for time and can't cook or get anything else to eat when I need it. But it's not a daily thing for me at all.

That's just my understanding of it, Your Mileage May Vary.

Thanks GreenChrysalis. Congrats on your 25+ weight loss!

That makes sense to me and confirms my thoughts that even thought it is a Protein Drink, i.e. heathy, it is still a liquid and will slip through the band.

I can't wait to have my surgery. I'm gonna stock up on the Protein Shakes (which I love) in preparation for the pre-op and post-op diet. I will ask my doc about them for after and see what he thinks.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
