Something is poking out of my port hole!

Recommended Posts

I am nearly 6 weeks post op and all of my incisions are healing nicely. My largest incision (where the port is) has had a little dry skin around it where the scabs finally came off. This weekend, I had one tiny piece of "dry skin" sticking out so I tried to just pull it off. When I pulled it, a string came from below the surface of my skin. I am so panicked. I am scared I pulled something loose or something. I just left it alone and alot of the string that came out has now gone back in, but I still have a tiny bit sticking out that looks like dry skin again. Has this happened to anyone else????

Yes, I had something similar. It wasn't in my port scar, but the one below it. It looked and felt like a tiny bit of plastic thread sticking out just a bit. I asked my surgeon and he said that it was just part of the suture that was sticking out and it would fall off. The sutures are soft when they are inside, but outside where the air gets to them they get stiff. It did fall off shortly after I spoke with him.

I didn't pull a lot out, but some of my glue from my incisions was expelled. It looked like dry skin and felt like plastic. I came out for weeks after surgery in pieces and finally got all nice and smooth.

I had the end of a dissolving stitch (the fishing wire looking stitches that can show through your skin) poking through one of my incisions and it was no big deal after a few weeks post op and it hadn't gone away I went to my docs and they gave it a gentle tug and it came right out (I could have done it myself but didn't know how it really was so I wanted to leave it to them). If you have concerns about it I would call your docs office but I'm sure its just a piece of dissolving stitch.

Sounds like suture material. I had a few little pieces the PA removed in a post op visit, one of them was like a knot tho' that wouldn't come out, it took about 6 weeks before it finally dissolved.

It's suture. I had the same thing after an operation a few months ago. Quite a bit was left out, enough that it would snag my shirts. In my case it went away on its own, took about 2 months. If it bugs you, go to your surgeon's office and tell him to trim it, if you don't want to do it on your own.

No reason to panic. There's nothing you could really pull loose unless you REALLY pulled, and then you'd know it.

Thanks everyone, for your replies. I am seeing my surgeon on Thursday, hopefully he can trim it for me or something.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
