Can you lose too much?

Recommended Posts

I have friends who have had either the Roux or GB. one of them is nearly emaciated. She struggles to keep weight on.

I see that there are some banders who have surpassed their goal weight and even are a little surprised to see that they have gone lower and lower.

I also read in some of the posts that there may be worry?? Worry to have an unfill...worry about losing too much....

Will the band stop working when you are at an ideal setpoint? Will the band keep working until you have gone way beyond what you or your doc thought was the lower end of "goal"?

Is the answer as simple as a slight unfill or will the body(at the current fill) adjust and stop losing and fall into maintenance?

I would be thrilled to arrive at goal but I know I would be hesitant about an unfill if it kept getting lower. How are you guys handling that if it is an issue?

There is good and bad with ANY WLS, no way around it. DS folks are kinda stinky, RNY have to take supplements for the rest of their lives, banded folks have our issues too. So you have to see which of the procedures have risks and complications you are willing to deal with.

Losing too much is not typically a factor with banding as banding requires the most effort to lose weight to begin with.

Yep, you are correct, a slight unfill if needed for maintenance.

That is the beauty of the band. If you are losing too much and want to maintain all you need is a slight unfill. The will accommodate more caloric intake as well as more hunger.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?
