The only test I can think of that sounds like what you're describing is an endoscopy. They can test for esophogus problems and they can do an H pylori test. I had one years ago and it was done with IV sedation.

Just ask the surgeon what tests are needed and then ask any questions you have about each of the tests.

Dear Oneangelinva:

I agree w/ shortgal, it sounds like an endoscopy - or sometimes called an "EGD". It is a flexible scope that has a fiberoptic light at the end, which the doctor can watch on a TV screen. The doctor looks at the inside of your esophagus, stomach, and first part of the small intestine, and checks for inflammation, ulcers, and anything abnormal. He/she can also take biopsies and a test for H. Pylori, the germ that can cause ulcers in some people.

It's done with sedation in an IV to take care of any pain and to help you relax. Most people don't remember much afterwards because of the medicine.

It's not as bad as it sounds. It is a very common procedure these days.

Good luck with your journey!

I had mine done a month or so ago, and it was nothing. They put you out and i didn't even have a sore throat. Took the night to get energy back after the anesthesia but other than that, I was totally fine. Quick and easy, my husband said that 15 minutes after he left me, they came and got him to tell him it was over. lol!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
