Tortillas and rice?

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

My dietician said that rice = caution and I don't see tortillas anywhere on my lists. I was wondering if and when these should be re-introduced and by how much? What does rice do to you that it = caution? I know it swells but is it a big problem? Thanks!

Shame, because I really love rice esp. brown rice it really tastes good to me and brown rice is very good for you, too:sad:. Oh well, I guess maybe some day I'll try it but not now.

As a Texan it does sadden me that tortillas are off the menu. However, as a Breakfast taco addict, I suspect they are part of how I got to where I was pre-surgery. After almost three weeks I have thought about them but no way. I have heard to many horror stories about white bread and tortillas. I can live without them.

I did eat a little nice in some Soup and it worked well, but it was super moist. However, I tried couscous. Thinking "hey, it's tiny. I bet it will be easy to eat." I couldn't have been more wrong. About 3 bites in it would feel like I have a cinder block on my chest. YUCK! I tossed the left overs and moved on.

Both are carbs and carbs convert into sugar as soon as they are consumed that is why your blood sugar level climbs so fast also any thing that is bleached or enriched is no good, but the brown rice in moderation is ok. I have always been a big bread and Tortilla person and it is hard to stay away from them. But if you need to have a tortilla it is better to have a corn tortilla and of course not fried...:biggrin2: remember HI Protein, low Carbs. Good Luck every one.

I don't have a problem with rice, it's pretty filling too.

Tortillas are another story. Maybe if I ate them plain and slow(why bother).. but if it's like a burrito or something, instant problem on the first bite. I like to eat fillings out of tortilla things if I have to go to a Mexican restaurant.

i never have a problem with rice. or couscous for that matter.

maybe it is the way i eat it. i try to mix it with my vegetables. and usually with some sort of a sauce. it goes down fine that way.

and i usually eat brown rice or basmati rice.

maybe tortillas do cause a problem. if i eat them with meat it is a problem, but if i eat it with vegetables, once again, it goes down fine. especially if there is a lot of salsa involved.

I tried rice in a Pakistani dish and it was fine. It was basmati rice though and no starch or anything washed off of it when rinsed so that might have something to do with it. I made sure to chew it really well and I ate it with vegetables and chicken... it was good. :-) I'm going to have to cut way back on the starches I've been consuming... I was so sick a couple of weeks ago that I couldn't eat anything and now that I have an appetite back, it's like I want to eat everything... but I'm going in for my first fill on Tuesday so I expect that may change... :crying:

I also am tortilla and rice addict. I understand the benefits of staying away from both. But I guess IF I am very hard pressed to eat tortilla my chicken tortilla Soup would be the best thing.

I can't do flour tortillas (or pretty much any bread product made from flour) -- feel "stuck" after only a bite or two!

But I can eat corn tortillas. And have handled rice (white and brown), but only in small quantities, not because I can't, but because I know I don't need to!

When I got my first fill I used to eat Wrap all the time w/ chicken and low-fat ranch.... but now on my second fill if I eat anything like bread or tortillas, even if I chew them well, it gets stuck. So I havent had a wrap for almost month.... had to choose new food to eat dinner time.

I havent had much problem with rice but I try to stick with brown if I eat rice.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
