1.5yrs post op and having problems

Recommended Posts

I am 1/5yrs post op. The problem I have is after a fill (2-4-weeks) I have to be unfilled because I am vomiting everything up. 2 weeks ago had .5cc's removed from the band. This Wednesday had another .5cc's removed from the band. Still could not keep anything down. Had an EGD (Endoscopy study) yesterday. The band is still in a good position. My pouch was full of sludge? THere was nothing stuck in the band. The doctor cleaned the pouch, unfilled the band all the way and told my husband (I was still knocked out). Maybe I am just going to be someone that the band will not work for. I have lost 50 lbs in the last 1.5 years and I do not want to get rid of the lap band. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM AND WHAT DID YOU DO.

Hmmm....

Well, how agressive do you want to be with the band?

That's what you have to decide and work with your doctor. Vomiting is never good. So if you are indeed vomiting, and not just sliming, then an unfill was in order.

Keep close to your doc, let them know how agressive you want to be and they will make this band work for you.

I basically had a very similiar problem. I will be banded two years in April and have only lost 53 pounds so far. The first year was great, last year was awful. I kept getting over-filled and letting it go until I really irritated my esophagus and had to have a complete un-fill for a long time. I finally got a fill in December, but am still not where I need to be. I go again on Monday and can't wait. My doctor and I have decided that I am one of those people who need to go very slow with fills and only get a tiny bit at a time. If it means it takes me that much longer to reach restriction, then so be it. Anything is better than being overfilled. Perhaps you need to take small baby steps with your fills as well.

I am so glad to know I am not alone. I have been filled and unfilled so many times in the last year. The doctor is starting to feel like I made need the band removed. I don't want to have it removed, especially since I now know the band has not slipped etc... At one point I had a fill of 3.5cc's. My last fill was to the 2cc mark. I am not giving up. When you started back with your fills, what was your first fill. I do have to say, the doctor has been working with me and he is great. I have lost 58 lbs in the last 1.5yrs.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
