Jan, I think most obese people have a fatty liver. I did and my dr. had me go on a low glycemic diet. It was very easy to follow and was to shrink the liver. It was basically healthy foods that we should be eating any way. The surgeon doesn't want to run the risk of nicking your liver during the placement of your band. If you do a search, you should be able to pull up that diet. Hang in there! It will definitely be worth the effort.

Hi Jan!

Dont be discouraged, I think this is a very wise doctor you have!!

My doctor recommened that I go on a liquid diet a week before my surgery to help reduce the fat on my liver.... did your doctor recommend any type of diet?

This is very commen.

Good luck! :)

Don't panic or be discouraged, I have heard of this plenty and the fatty liver is typical in obese people and it is good to shrink it before the Dr wiggles around in there with sharp instruments. 20kg is around 44lbs, which is a pretty good amount, does your Dr expect you to do this before 4/29, your band date? That is a solid 6 weeks away...you can do anything for 6 weeks and you will do fine. Cuts the carbs and the fat, do lots of veggies and lean Proteins, LOTS of Water and go to FitDay.com and put in your food, so you will see what you are eating. You CAN do this!

I have been looking for you on the April 2005 Bandsters thread under the Support Forum. Come say hello there. We have almost a dozen getting banded in April! woohoo! Keep us posted, Jan!

Editing:

Ooops! You are to lose 10kg, not 20 so that is around 22 lbs in 6 weeks to Band Date...aw, man, you can really do this, Jan! No problem!

Jan,

My Doctor will not do the surgery on anyone unless they follow a liquid diet for 14 days prior. The only reason our Dr puts anyone on the diet is to reduce the size of the liver. Weight loss(i lost 20 pounds in the two weeks) is a good side effect. ASk your Dr about it.

Hello Jan

My doctor had me go on a liquid diet for ten days prior to surgery. I think most of us had to. I was told that shrinking the liver allows easier access to the stomach. I lost 21 lbs as a result. Go for it, everything sounds normal to me. Good Luck!!!

You can always get a 2nd and 3rd opinion. I say this because one very popular surgeon kinda snickered when I asked him about operating on someone with a fatty liver (I was worried since mine was fatty.) He said experienced doctors can get around the fatty liver without problem, and only a lazy inexperienced doc will have a problem. Don't quote me though, cause I'm just passing on one surgeon's comment.

Different docs seem to have different protocols, and for some it depends on your BMI. I didn't have to change my diet at all before the surgery, and my BMI was 39-ish. But some smaller people have been asked to go on liquids for weeks before banding, and some larger patients with BMIs >50 don't have to make any changes, depending on the doctor.

Liver size is an issue; a liver retractor is one of the implements used during the laparascopic procedure. (The resulting scar is tiny.) Yes, 22 lbs. is a lot to lose in such a short time, but if your doc says you have a liver problem and wants you to lose weight before surgery, he's probably doing it to make the surgery easier for both of you. It's a drag, but lots of people here (like Greg and Shaz) have done it and had successful results... maybe they'll share their liquid-diet secrets.

I understantd this isn't your words so I want everyone to know I'm only quoting the quote.

I feel only a reckless Dr won't use all means available to make the surgery compliction free.

I am on the liquid diet right now & have been since last Tuesday. Here is what I have in a 24 hr period.

(x4) Boost - high Protein drinks-8fl oz each

(x1) Lite & Fit Dannon Yogart-6oz cup ..but allowed 8oz

(x1) Instant Carnation Instant Breakfast Mix w/8oz skim milk

Thats it- its tough, But in 4 days I am down 3.5 pounds ;0) & its getting easier each day. Of course Drink your water-ALWAYS. I was told by someone, if I had too, I could have a zero calorie something like a pickle, also diet coke. I have had diet coke.

By the way I started just because I thought I may have a surgery date. It was for the 29 of March but now has moved. I think your Doctor is very smart & cares about you & your procedure. Listen to him. You'll do Great!!

He should recommend a dietian for you to speak with. That is who planned out my liquid phase.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
