Anyone else newly banded and having a hard time with fluids

Recommended Posts

Hello Everyone,

I was banded on 3/10. I spent over a week in the hospital afterwards with post surgical obstruction whatever the heck that is. Had to have another surgery to loosen the band while I was in the hospital. Anyways I'm doing better now. Each day gets a little easier. The good thing is I lost 17 lbs the week I was in the hospital and 8 so far this week. I can only have liquids. I tried yogurt, slim fast, pudding, cream of wheat and they all came right back up. I'm already familiar with PBing I guess, and it's not a nice feeling at all for me. Is anyone else strugling to take in all the fluids or is it just me beacuse I'm so tight. I keep my bottle of Water and Isopure with me everywhere I go and keep sipping but I can only take the smallest sips with no pain and sometimes have to take long breaks inbetween. My Dr. wanted me to be having 6-700 calories a day with 60 grams of Protein but I'm lucky to get half that in and keep it down. Thanks for any info you can share with me.

Steve

There are Clear Liquids and full liquids so your surgeon might want you on Clear Liquids at this stage. Until the swelling and tightness goes down, you can get your Protein in with a clear liquid Protein Drink like Isopure CLEAR. It has 40 gms of Protein in one 20 oz bottle. Take small sips ( one to two ozs) every few minutes. And try to finish at least one bottle a day. Is that the one you are drinking?

I had trouble the first few days I was home drinking a whole bottle, too. It took me all day. But my Dr told me to just drink as much as I could and try to increase it every day.

Apparently the fuller liquids are too thick for you right now.

Hey Steve - sounds like you had a pretty big adventure. From the sound of it you have been out of the hospital only a few days? I was banded 3/4 and my first 5 days were tough with Water specifically. I could sip on 100% fruit juice pretty successfully, but Water was tough. I also tried the new G2 loe sugar Gatorade and it went down well.

To help with water, we bought little 8 oz bottles of water. They stay cooler which seemed to help and a tiny bottle like that is not overwhelming. Also very easy to measure.

I would say that by day 7 after surgery I was drinking water regularly. Today, a little more than 2 weeks post-op I am nearly back at pre-surgery water consumption. (I am big water drinker.)

Hope that helps. Good luck!!

I too have been having a hard time with this, being banded this past Monday, but it does get easier, its a constant challenge to keep sipping. I've lost almost 13lbs since monday. Even the Boost is a challenge to drink. Everything stays down okay, its just getting it down.

Carlos, Have you called your Dr to tell him/her this problem? What are you eating now? Have you had a fill yet, since surgery? Do you know if the Dr put any fill in your band when the band was placed?

Oh Lord I remember this, I had a horrible time getting in the required amount of Fluid. I literally had to stay up late and get up early to have enough time in the day to get it in and I still wasn't doing it consistently til probably 4 weeks out and then it still was a struggle some days.

My advice is to sip and sip and sip some more and when you think you can not sip another thing do it some more.....LOL

The Water is so very important in getting the fat out.....LOL

Good Luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
