A couple days after being banned, I started to feel numbness and pain in my upper leg. It is numb all the time, but hurts esp. when I lay down on my back. I talked to my doc and I know he said that it is common, but I have yet to encounter anyone with the same problem. Has this happened to anyone else? If so, is it gone?

Joe:

I used to have pain and numbness in my left upper leg. However, I had it before surgery. After I lost about 60 pounds it went away. It could be that you're walking funny and positioning your body different because you're protecting your sore tummy. If you're still concerned about it, please go and visit your doctor to get piece of mind.

I hope it resolves itself soon.

Take care.

Sue

I have numbness in my right thigh (the top part). Mine is caused by a pinched nerve in the back - more than likely caused by my weight. However, right after surgery, I walked, kind of hunched over and didn't sit up straight and it totally aggravated it. My Dr. put me on Flexeril (which, yes is a NSAID). It loosens the muscles in my back and stops the numbness and burning pain. I am hoping that loosing more weight will stop in totally.

There are several contributing factors to upper thigh and lateral leg pain.

Some of them arrise from "pinched nerves" ((not that you don't have one))others come from impingements/entrapments of nerves from muscles, inguinal ligament, quads.

Meralgia paresthetica is often misdiagnosed as pinched nerves or something else.

Your Doc, PT, Chiro or Massage Therapist can put you through some range of motion tests to discover which it really is.

Meraligia paresthetica is a condition where the LCFN- lateral femoral cutaneous nerve is impinged.

Obesity, pregnancy, low rise jeans wearers, toolbelt wearers, gun holster wearers can suffer.

Only a Dr. can diagnose.

If it is MP a first line approach to relief would be (of course I would say this...) is giong to a good neuromuscular Massage Therapist. A few sessions of them cross Fiber frictioning and stripping the muscles of the anterior thigh can do wonders.

I had this problem about 2 weeks after my surgery. It lasted about 2 days. My upper outside left thigh was a bit numb. I didn't really have any pain though. I talked to my dr and he said as long as it went away within a couple of days, it should be fine. Sure enough, it went away and I haven't had any problems since then.

I am almost 18 wks post op and my thigh has been numb since day of surgery! I have about a 4X6 inch area on the top part of my right upper thigh that has been changing and somewhat improving but definitely not gone yet. I asked my doc at my first post op exam and he said it should be gone within a month and he was not sure why it happens. I haven't mentioned it since.

For at least 1 month the area became very sensitive to the touch, almost like a burn. Now it is just partially numb and hasn't change in a very long time, so I think it may be permanent!

Wondering if anyone else has this problem and how long they have had it.

If I had numbness or pain in my leg ordinarily, I"d be thinking it was my darn back. But that soon after surgery, jeez, I'd be hightailing it to the doctor with panicky thoughts about a DVT. Please check it out!

I know this thread is old, but I was just researching this! I have had this on and off for 6 years if I lay on my back, but since 2 days after surgery, it has been non stop in my right thigh! So irritating. I'm seeing my doctor Wednesday to see if there's anything I can do. Glad to see I'm not alone.

I did check with the Dr and they really had no explanation but just so you know it is 95% back to normal. I don't even notice it anymore and mine was my right leg too. Since writing that my band slipped and was removed and 4 months later put back on. I have had no problems with numb thighs or anything else this time around!!! I'd say it did last about 6 months though. Good luck to you!

I knew I wasn't crazy! I was banded 6 days ago and have since had major numbness in both my thighs. My left has alleviated...but my right feels like it is frostbitten all the time and at it's worst when I am trying to fall asleep on my back. Please tell me this will end. My doc thinks they may have strapped me in too tight on the table.

Same thing happened to me! After surgery my thighs went numb too, mostly my right one and most often in bed at night when trying to fall asleep! It went away after a couple weeks. Never thought it was related to the surgery until I read this thread. How funny is that?

It was good to see some new posts about this. I was banded on 3-2 and started getting these pains in my upper and lower legs about 3 days after I got home. It is always at night and while I no longer need pain meds for the incisions, I find myself reaching for something just so that I can get back to sleep. Of course, I had my 1 week post-op appt. yesterday and completely forgot to tell the dr. about that (maybe just looking to get out of there?). I will give the office a call just to make sure but it looks like this too shall pass.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
