After surgery problems (trouble urinating and waking up biting my tongue)

Recommended Posts

I had my band put in yesterday morning (3/19), now I am having trouble urinating. I have to go every 30 minutes but only urinating about 2 tablespoons (estimate of course). Also when I fall asleep I have been constantly waking up biting my tongue:frown:. Have any of you had these problems post surgery?

Thank you for your response. I probably drank 40oz. last night so I don't think that is the problem. I did call my doc today and just waiting for him to call me back.

I had the same problem the evening after my surgery, I was told it was the anesthia because it turns off your bladder and it takes a while for it to wear off so that could be the reason for that. The other thing I'm not sure about.

I too had both problems.

It took about 4 days for my bladder to "wake up" and the biting went away after about the same amount of time.

My guess is it has everything to do w/ anesthesia and nothing to do with any damage caused by a cath - which was my greatest worry.

I did not have a cath in the hospital. But my doc told me to go to urgent care to get cathed. Ouch it burns, but I am feeling better. My doc said the tongue biting was from the narcotics, same with the pee issue so he has taken me of pain pills. Oh well they didn't work that great anyway.

i definitely had the problem urinating. I would go tinkle....tinkle....wait...wait...tinkle. after a few days i could go a little more but i also think a lot may have to do with the fact that you use your stomach muscles when you urinate - i was finally going at "full speed" after about a week post surgery.

I have had problem peeing after surgeries too, my plumbing is the outside variety (boy parts) so they had to do a cathider, YIKES, those hurt going in!! The nurse reminded me of Kathy Bates in the movie, Misery. I started calling her Iron Paws after that, I'd cover up whenever she came in the room, the women was a man hater and she took out her hatred on my little friend.

I ended up having to go to urgent care because my doc thought I had blockage. They did an in and out cath on me and I felt a whole lot better afterwards. Other that the burning sensation urinating now, ouch.

My nurse wouldn't let me do something till I peed in a bowl and let her measure it. I had to pee really bad some reason, and I think it's the most I've ever peed in my life.. was like Tom Hanks in A League of Their Own. It looked like 1/2 gallon. But, they obviously have to check to make sure you can pee after surgery for whatever reason. Glad the biting stopped, that sounded weird!

Some people do have those symptoms/problems after surgery but they go away once the anesthesia is completely out of your system. If you ever need to have surgery again, make sure you explain these side-effects to your surgeon and anesthesiologist. I hope you're feeling better!

I understand your pain. Just had surgery on March 26 about two hours from my home. After surgery I could not go at all. Called the doctor at midnight and he told me it was "urinary retention" from the anesthesia and to go into the emergency room for a straight cath. They took off 1200 c.c. and I felt so good. Now everything is fine.

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

The 14th was my day. I am home and recovery is going pretty smooth. They even let me walk out of the hospital. Picture of me in recovery curtesy of my boyfriend lol.

Neat you have a pic of this day! I was sooo happy to get my surgery. It was well worth it! And I'm not even near my goal. I had surgery Dec. 2!
