Nutritional program?

Recommended Posts

how many of you have a hands on nutritionist? I have been reading a lot of posts from the march and feb bandsters and a lot of people say they are confused as to what they are supposed to eat. My nut writes down everything i can have, sample menus, amounts I am supposed to stick with when to eat, when to take supplements EVERYTHING! is this not the norm?

I have not seen a nutritionist. My Dr. office gives a booklet that was put together with a nut. and their office as a guideline for eating. I do not know if they will have us see a nut. later or at all.

My surgeon requires a consult with a nutritionist, which is actually a year-long contract with the nut! I can email him or call him with any questions during that time, which I am sure I will! He gave me the post-operative diet sheets and explained all the phases of the diet as well - I think he is going to be a great resource for me in the months ahead.

(I love that everyone calls them "nut" lol)

The only time I saw one was just after surgery for instructions on the post op diet, she had lots of suggestions for mushies and liquids and first solids, and the timing etc.

After that, I have just eaten healthily which is what she told me to do - eat according to the healthy food pyramic. Protein first is generally not the advice given here, just healthy eating, and so I've just eaten a diet based mainly on fruit, veg, healthy carbs (oatmeal, wholegrain bread, rice and pasta) with moderate Protein and lowered fat - more good fats than saturated fats, so avodados, nuts, olive oil etc.

I think most of us have done enough dieting to know what a healthy diet for weight loss is.

I have been seeing a dietician every month for over a year. Once I got approved, I was given a whole different set of rules...Band related of course. I also have strict guidelines about post op too. I am required to see her at 2 weeks, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year, then annually for life. I have access to hear anytime in between I need her as well. I think I could have done fine on my own, but it is good to have someone to be accountable to. The only problem/complaint I have with her is that she keeps forgetting I am a LapBand patient, NOT Roux-en-Y! I have to redirect her frequently!

I had to see a nutritionist before I could set my surgery date. We talked a lot about what I could and couldn't eat after surgery. The kind of things I wanted to avoid. She let me sample several Protein Drinks for right after surgery to see which ones I liked. She told me how much Protein I should eat on a daily basis after surgery. She gave me samples of Vitamins. She gave me a list of things I might want to have on hand for right after surgery and where I could buy them. She was very helpful and I'm glad I had to see her.

I saw a nutritionist at my consultation, but my surgean gave me a list of foods to eat for each stage. So I know already what I can and can not have the test will be to stick to it.

We had an education class. The bariatric nurse started it with pre- during hospital stay-post op diet, supplements and exercises. The nut also was there and went over all of the nutrtion stuff again. We must attend another class at 1,3,6,9,and 12 months and have a visit with the surgeon. We also must have blood work before all of these classes except at 1 month.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
