Preparing for the pre-surgical liquid diet

Recommended Posts

I am going shopping today to get items for my one week liquid diet. I have to have no more than 50 carbs per day and a min of 80g of Protein. I purchased a container of low carb Protein Powder at GNC and a shaker yesterday. I have also purchased a few sugar free DaVinci syrups to add some flavor. It looks like I can have broth and cream Soups as well. My surgery is on April 4 so I have to begin this diet next Friday.

Chilly - You are lucky! I wish I only had 3 days! I am trying to get ready for the transition. I am going to try my first Protein Shake tonight. I bought a container of vanilla Isopure which is carb free. I sure hope it tastes good!

Colorado -- Have you already had your pre-op appointment with Dr. P? If so, can you tell me what happens? My pre-op is March 31, and I have to start the liquid diet on Apr. 4. Do they recommend certain Protein Shakes, or can you just pick one you like?

LisaB - Yes, I had the appointment on Monday. Sue went over the procedure and gave me my lap band "bible". It is booklet they put together with tons of information. I was also given a bunch of sample packets of Unjury and another brand. They did not specify which Protein powder to buy although you have to keep your carbs under 50 each day. I went to GNC to see if they had samples but no luck although they will give you store credit if you absolutely hate the product you buy. Also Dr. P takes some before photos and addresses any questions or concern you may have about the surgery. I start the liquid diet on March 28th. I am getting nervous but still excited!!

Tell us how the liquid diet goes. I am dreading it, but I'm so "psyched" now, I am determined to do everything right. Have you been to one of the support group meetings? I'm planning on going to the April meeting.

Double check w/ Sue, but I think the support group meets the second Tuesday of every month in one of the conference rooms in Building 1850.

I was hoping to be banded March 28th, but the surgeon was booked, so now mine is April 4th. I started the liquid diet on Monday. Monday wasn't too bad, but Tuesday about killed me. Then they called and said my surgery was the 4th and I could eat until this Friday. Thank goodness lol. The taste wasn't bad,but the smell of the Protein gagged me. I am going to ask about drinking Slim Fast Low Carb shakes. I have to be on liquids for 2 weeks prior to surgery!!!!

I have to start my liquid diet tomorrow...2 weeks pre-op. I have a few different Protein Shake options, and will be going to costco friday to get a large tub of slim fast powder unless i decide i like the Atkins shakes better. I also got a few flavors of the Isopure Protein Water type drinks to try. I have to have 70-75 grams protein, and 200-250 calories for each protein replacement meal 3-4 times a day depending on the amount of protein, and then Clear Liquids besides that, broth, water, crystal light sf Jello, sf popsicles, and sf fudgesicles.

I tried the Unjury chocolate Protein Shake this morning. It was pretty good! I did add a splash of sugar free DaVinci chocolate Syrup and used milk for mixing. I will try my sample of Unjury strawberry tonight and let you know about taste.

My doc (or rather his nurse) wants me to start a liquid modified diet on April 1. My surgery isn't until April 25... ACK!

But, I have tried to do the modified now and am finding that as the days go by, it gets easier to stick with and I'm not as hungry as I thought I would be. What makes me nervous is I have lost quite a bit of weight since I started keeping track and now fall below the 35 BMI that is required. Surely the doc will still do this as I know if I don't get it, I'll just go right back up in weight adding many more to what I was before!

If any of you are required to do low carb liquid diet I thought I would pass on some things I have found useful. I found Hood's Carolie Countdown dairy products at Wegmans and have used this to make Protein Shakes. It has very low carbs and Protein. I also bought Isopure low carb vanilla protein powder - it mixes very well with no yucky lumps! I made a yummy shake this morning with Hoods Dairy product - Isopure Vanilla protein powder and a shot of Davinci banana sugar free syrup! It was so good! I also bought Davinci sugar free Orange, strawberry, Peach, Carmel, chocolate and toasted marshmallow. I want to amke sure that I have a lot of variety in the taste. My kids also love the syrups in thier drinks so it is sure not to go to waste and since it is sugar free is will not go to my waist! LOL

I hope you all are having a GREAT DAY!!

Question for anyone, how did you get your mind right before surgery? Like as far as eating better foods and just doing better in general? I'm having a really hard time with this. Any help is appreciated 🙏❤️

I had about 6 months between deciding to do surgery and getting scheduled. I came across the book The Pound of Cure by Dr. Matthew Weiner, a bariatric surgeon in Arizona, and started to implement some of the changes he recommended (and lost 13 lbs in the process without ever feeling deprived). The book is very simple, and the focus is on whole, plant based foods, but within reason. It's not an all or nothing approach, or going vegan or something, but focuses on improvement and aiming for getting it right 80-90% of the time. His suggestions are divided into 12 sections that you can tackle over time, perhaps one per month for a year if a person is just trying to improve nutrition and build good habits. They range from things like cutting out artificial sweetener or eating more beans to eating a pound of vegetables per day. I found it really effective pre-surgery and it's an eating style I will be working to get back to as I am further out from surgery and have more capacity. Small changes you can sustain will do the most for building good habits for life.

That sounds awesome. I'll have to check that out thanks!

I've hit a stall 9 months out. I'm not worried, though. My fitness levels continue to improve and I have nearly accomplished my pre-surgery goal of learning to scuba dive! One dive left to complete to get my PADI card 🐠
I was able to go for a 10K/6mile hike in the mountains two days ago just for the fun of it. In the before days, I might have attempted this, but it would have taken me 7 or 8 hours to complete and I would have been exhausted and in pain for the next two days. Taking my time with breaks for snacks and water, I was finished with my wee jaunt in only 4 hours 😎 and really got to enjoy photographing some insects, fungi, and turtles.
Just for fun last week, I ran two 5Ks in two days, something I would have never done in the past! Next goal is a 10K before the end of this month.

Hi everyone, I wrote back in May about having no strength. I still get totally exhausted just walking from room to room, it’s so bad I’m using a walker with wheels of all things. I had the gastric sleeve Jan. 24th. I’m doing exactly what the programs says, except protein shakes. I have different meats and protein bars daily, including vitamins daily. I do drink my fluids as well.  I go in for IV hydration 4 days a week and feel ok just til evening.  So far as of Jan 1st I’ve dropped 76 lbs. I just want to enjoy the weight lose. Any suggestions or has anyone else gone thru this??  Doctor says just increase calorie intake, still the same.

Losing my hair in clumps and still dealing with "stomach" issues from gallbladder removal surgery. On the positive side I'm doing better about meeting protein and water goals and taking my vitamins, so yay? 🤷‍♀️
