I was banded on 2/13. What I thought was restriction after the surgery was just swelling. After that went down in about one week, I could eat to the same proportions as before banding.

I went to the doc at 3 weeks and they said they would give me my first fill. I could still eat a car if I wanted to!!

Well, today they had me go for an upper gi then come to their office. They said that everything looked great. That first fill was 3cc's in my 10cc band. My doc is pretty agressive so she gave me another 3cc's for my second fill. I couldn't get the Water down so she took out 1cc leaving me with a total of 5cc. She said to have just liquids/mushies today and tomorrow then I can go back to solid food.

Well, for dinner I had broccoli/cheese Soup to go from Applebees and was still starving (only had a yoghurt today since I couldn't eat for the upper gi) so I then had some cottage cheese, then I mashed up an avocado and ate that. To me, that STILL seems more than I should be able to eat after a fill.

I keep hearing about how we're supposed to eat about 1/2 cup food per meal and I ate more than that after my fill. I'm thinking maybe 1/2 cc more.

Anyway, so my first fill was at 3 weeks, and this, my second, was at 5 weeks.

They said I can come back when I want for another fill if I'm not restricted. I originally had lost 13 pounds afer surgery and now that loss is only at 5 pounds so I seem to be gaining! Yikes!

If I could have done this w/out the band I would have, but I need restriction. And no, it's not head hunger. I'm certain of that. I really tune in and see where I'm at.

Should I get another fill?

Marie

Hi,

I would wait and see how the band tightens on you. Just give it one week! I had the same issues and I got too filled and since then have had a lot of problems getting it right! My fills didn't usually kick in until 2 weeks after them but everyone is different! I was so anxious myself that I went back and forth,,,fill, unfill, fill, unfill, you get the picture ,,it took the coordinator telling me to let it rest to stop me as I wanted it to work so bad and I was scared! Just hang in there and give yourself and the band (saline) time to settle. Just my Humble opinion. PS: if you mushed up what you ate it wouldn't have even been a full cup of food! Didn't seem too much to me but then I eat 1 cup to 1 1/2 cups per meal and I lost really well when I wasn't messing with the fills too much! Good luck!

That is the way it is supposed to be.

You've got a great doc!

Nope, you are on target. You don't reduce the quantity of food until AFTER restriction....not just because you got the band or a fill.

I keep hearing about how we're supposed to eat about 1/2 cup food per meal and I ate more than that after my fill. I'm thinking maybe 1/2 cc more.

Ignore that...unless that's what your own doctor said. Mine said no such thing.

Anyway, so my first fill was at 3 weeks, and this, my second, was at 5 weeks.

Pretty good, you are on track.

They said I can come back when I want for another fill if I'm not restricted. I originally had lost 13 pounds afer surgery and now that loss is only at 5 pounds so I seem to be gaining! Yikes!

Yes, make your appointment for 4 weeks out...need it-go. Don't - cancel.

If I could have done this w/out the band I would have, but I need restriction. And no, it's not head hunger. I'm certain of that. I really tune in and see where I'm at.

If you can eat a cup or half a cup...you wouldn't have gotten the band...doctors know this. So they don't really expect a patient to do that.

Should I get another fill?

Again, make your appointment and go if you need to.

Good luck and keep us posted.

You really don't know if you have restriction until you are able to eat solid food. You ate Soup, cottage cheese and other soft mushie food ( as you should after the fill).

The pouch is meant to hold solid food, so wait until then to re-evaluate.

I suggest when it's time for solid food you take a small portion of solid Protein and a little serving of veggies. Eat it carefully and slowly and stop eating. Wait 30 mins and then decide if you are hungry. It takes time for our head to catch up to the band. Your eyes can deceive your stomach by sending signals that the amount you ate, isn't what you usually have.

Just try a variety of solid food for a few days ( when it's time) and that will help determine if you need more fill.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
