6 months out, and still don't understand!!

Recommended Posts

I was banded 9/5/07 and when I go for a fill I lose 2-3lbs right after my fill. Then I don't lose anything for a month or so. What is up with that? I have lost about 33lbs. Does anyone find that that is a little slow? My last fill was 02/17/08 and I have some restriction, but just not really losing any weight. So what do I do?

I am not sure how many fills you have had at this point. Just for reference I was banded on 1-7-08 and have lost 34 lbs. You also didn't say what your BMI was so not sure how much you want to lose. Mine was almost 40. I have had 1 fill and do not feel a lot of restriction. I have however changed my eating habits. I stay below 1000 cals a day. I also work out at the gym 5-6 days a week. I haven't overeaten yet so the band is not really doing what it was intended to do yet. I just want to be very conservative with my fills. Not looking forward to sliming or pbing so trying to work on issues without the band for now. It will be more helpful to me as I get down closer to my goal and just maintaining. Are you for sure getting in 60 grams of Protein and 64 oz Water a day. Very important for continued loss. Are you eating out a lot? Lots of hidden calories there. Hey be happy 33lbs is a good amount. Just stay the course.

Hi Redgirl - I was banded the same day as you!

If your BMI was low in the beginning, that may be why. I have heard that lower BMI's lose slower. I am at 228 now, but I started near 300 pounds. I've started to slow...I was averaging about 10 pounds per month, but now it's slowing to 5 pounds per month. I think the "new fat" melted off pretty quickly, but the pounds I'm hitting now are harder to lose.

And, keep going because a loss is still a loss! I keep telling myself it took me 20 years to pack all this on, it's not falling off overnight!

Hey Redgirl,

You and I were banded around the same time....and I understand. I am not going to hit you in the head with how many calories I eat or how much exercise I do because frankly everyone is different. I do agree 100% with Gloucester when she said higher BMI's tend to lose faster than lower BMI's. Also it doesn't sound like you have good restriction (like me).

5 days ago I got a fill and I think this is the restriction I needed (we'll see). I also had a recent epiphany.....maybe it is time to switch up my exercise (the kind I do). Or maybe I should change what I eat. We have to figure out what works for us and what allowed us to lose the last 10-15 pounds after the post-op diet was over and go back to that. Truthfully....I'm thinking maybe that's the key and when we stall again (because we will), we should switch again!

Good Luck to all of us!

Wow, I was banded on 01-07-08 too and have only lost 10 lbs! well, dont i feel like a pig! 34lbs!! that is amazing! good for you! I dont know how you do 1000 cal a day though. I have been eating out and although I only eat half of the portion, obviously there are a lot of calories in what I am eating. I have changed my eating habits and am going to be changing up my exercise routine and see if that helps. doc says that 1-2 lbs is what he wants me to lose. my BMI was 38 to start. I have lost inches though from all the walking. My goal is another 10 lbs by mothers day........i can do it!

I was not losing for a week and still dutifully doing my walking exercise 45 min a day. I got a flash and went to the gym and did 3 different cardio machines in 45 min and pushed it. this morning i was down 1.75 lbs. Gee I wonder how i did that. yuk yuk

Gotta mix it up and sweat! The gym for me and no more easy walking.

The Flash: My body wants to get rid of this weight for me but I gotta help it! It lets go if I make my intentions clear.

I'll walk the dog but then I gotta sweat it a bit.

Sadie

Forgot to add that I was very careful with my diet while i wasn't losing. Just about 1000 a day and still stuck. No sugar and low carb. still stuck.

the exercise is the only thing I changed. Unstuck.

Hey, Red Girl...I've stalled out MANY times in my 7.5 months. I'll drop 3 or 4 pounds, then sit at that number for 3 or 4 WEEKS! Very annoying.

BUT -- People kept commenting on how good I looked AND the clothes kept getting looser. And, eventually, the scales will move again!

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
