Is fruit OK?

Recommended Posts

Had LB surgery one month ago. I was given a box of oranges and tangerines and have been eating them. Is this OK? I have never really seen a topic that says NO fruit. Please, all of you who have had the LB for awhile, did you have fruit?

Most fruit is ok, but be careful about fruit skins (like apple peels), seeds, and the membrane in between sections of citrus fruits. So as long as you just eat the "meat" of the fruit, you should be ok. Also, dried and dehydrated fruit is a no-no because it will expand in your stomach and can get stuck.

I do normally only eat one serving of fruit per day because it can be high in carbs and with a 800-1000 cal diet - I'm usually more worried about getting in my Proteins and veggies. Hope that's helpful!

I eat fruit every day. Nowadays, orange membranes are a little much for me so I chew chew chew chew then spit out whatever I can't "chew to goo". I also have to peel my apples now. Fruit is a fine choice for a low-calorie snack if your meals are spaced really far apart. (unless you're specifically on a low-carb diet)

I think fruit is a great way to satisfy a sweet tooth, and it has to be a lot better for you than all those "chemical non-foods" such as sugarfree Jello, sugarfree pudding etc etc.

YES! fruit is fine. I took fruit out of my diet initially and had a terrible problem with digestion and elimination. I was so consitpated I was miserable. Adding fruit back in the diet helped immensely. I just watch how much and what type. Low calorie fruits are melon and strawberries. Fruit that is high in calorie are pears and pineapple. As mentioned above, just watch the pithy skin on citrus fruit sections. I peel my sections. I eat three or four sections of grapefruit every morning. So it takes me several days to eat an entire grapefruit, but the benefits are remarkable.

I was given a crate of oranges a while back...didn't know what to do with them as I eat fruit too fast...gets kinda stuck and I can't seem to slow it down.

Thinking outside the box...orangeaide! W/ splenda, of course.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
