Pre-Op Diet w/Carbs...

Recommended Posts

I start my pre-op diet on Good Friday, March 21st and have questions. I've read some folks are on a liquid only diet but my nutritionist has a different approach. We are to get at least 90-120 grams of Protein per day from our Protein Shakes but we must also get 100 grams of carbohydrates each day. Was anyone else told to limit their carbs?

My surgeon's office and nutritionist has me on a very low (almost no) carb diet. The only carbs come from 1/2-1 cup veggies; rare fruit (if you can fit it in). I will say that this diet prepared me well before surgery and has caused me to drop weight quite quickly (and I've stuck to the diet religiously).

The main purpose of the pre-op diet is to deplete the liver of its sugar stores. The liver stores sugars, when the body isn't getting sugars from the food you're eating, it will signal the liver to let go of its stores. Tossing out its sugars will make the liver smaller. A smaller liver makes it easier for the surgeon to access the area where s/he will put the band.

Someone on a 2k calorie diet would eat around 300gm of carbohydrates. 100gm is not a huge reduction compared to what most people are told to do during their pre-op diet. My pre-op diet was 0gm carb for 2 days.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
