5 DAY POUCH TEST - Anyone heard????

Recommended Posts

I saw this on another board, the website is: Surgical Weight Loss 5 Day Pouch Test

Here is a description from the website: The 5 Day Pouch Test by Kaye Bailey

Does my pouch still work?

Have I broken my pouch?

Have I ruined my tool?

These are questions many weight loss surgery post-ops find themselves asking occasionally during their journey. Perhaps it feels like we can eat more food or we know that we are eating more food. Sometimes these questions are asked when there has been a weight regain.

This is the 5-day plan that I have developed and used to determine if my pouch is working and return to that tight newbie feeling. And a bonus to this plan, it helps one get back to the basics of the weight loss surgery diet and it triggers weight loss. Also, it is not difficult to follow and if you are in a stage of carb-cycling it will break this pattern. Sounds pretty good, right?

The 5 Day Pouch Test should never leave you feeling hungry. You can eat as much of the prescribed menu as you want during the day to satiate hungry and prevent snacking on slider foods and/or white carbs. You must drink a minimum of 64 ounces of Water each day. A reduction of caffeinated beverages is suggested, but do not stop caffeine cold turkey.

Weight loss is not the intent of the 5 Day Pouch Test, however, many who have tried this plan report a significant drop in weight. More importantly they Celebrate a renewed sense of control over their pouch and eating habits and easily transition back to a healthy post-surgical weight loss way of eating.

Below you will find a brief list of the menu for each day. Please click the "Read more" links for further detail and hints and tips that will enable your success with the 5 Day Pouch Test.

Days One & Two: liquid Protein

low-carb Protein shakes, broth, clear or cream Soups, sugar-free Gelatin and pudding. Read more.

Day 3: Soft Protein

canned fish (tuna or salmon) eggs, fresh soft fish (tilapia, sole, orange roughy. Read more.

Day 4: Firm Protein

ground meat (turkey, beef, chicken, lamb), shellfish, scallops, lobster, fresh salmon or halibut. Read more.

Day 5: Solid Protein

white meat poultry, beef steak, pork, lamb, wild game

Good luck! I believe you are going to like the results when you give this plan an honest try.

Cheers!

Kaye Bailey

There is a lot more on the site, this is just the intro of the site- there looks like there is lots more!

Don't see how eating certain things on certain days can possibly tell you anything about how well your band is working.

This is a gastric bypass thing. They can't change the size of their pouch like we can by adjusting the band. We can stretch our pouches too with overeating, but that often can be reversed with an unfill and rest, then we are back to our old pouch.

I too thought this might just be for gastic bypass patients but after reading from their webpage I think this might be a good tool for those of us who have gone off our plan to give us a new jumpstart???

What do ya'll think?

I think it is a good "carb detox" plan. If we start to find too many carbs creeping in to our daily intake, following a plan like that can help us get back on track.

I am trying this 5 day pouch test to see if it works for me. I also thought that this is only for gastric bypass patients. I don't have a carbohydrate problem, and I have been sticking to my band rules for the most part.

One person I talked to in the chat room tried this test and lost 5 lbs. in three days. Also, someone at my doctor's support group meeting mentioned this test and lost some weight, so it peaked my interest to find out what this is all about. I was encouraged by the 5 lb. weight loss, so I am trying this out for myself. I figured, this surely won't hurt me to do so!

This is day one of the pouch test for me, liquids. I am planning to have 3 or 4 shakes today, and I am drinking Clear Liquids in between. Tomorrow I will have the sugar free Jello and sugar free pudding. If I find any significant results from this test, I will let you all know. Why not give it a try, too?

Hi! My sisters have both had RNY and I've had the lap band. Their doc recommended this when my sister needed a jumpstart getting back on the right path.

I'm going to do it with her. The doc said that it would help our metabolism. I don't see how it could hurt. I think the only deviation for the band is that we should wait an hour after eating to drink where a RNY patient can drink in 30 minutes. Good luck!

I read the site and can't help but wonder who wrote it? It is written in such poorly written English that I doubt it is an educated professional. I am with the pp who asked, "how will eating certain foods on different days tell you how well your band is working?"

Take that site as one person's opinion. If it works for you, fine, but I doubt it is "professional advice".

ETA: For anyone who is striving for ketosis, please do some research on it. Ketosis is NOT a good thing!

I'm sure that's why they only recommend 5 days. Ketosis is the reason why I avoid the Adkins diet. I just don't think it's healthy long term. MANY of the people I know who did it, now have cholesterol problems months after jetting off of it. Good enough reason for me to avoid it.

Well, I tried this 5-day pouch test, and by day 3 I had lost 4 lbs. I found that I had trouble sticking to the all Protein requirements for days 4 and 5. While I was happy with the weight loss, unfortunately, when I stopped the test, I had gained back the 4 lbs. lost plus an additional 4 pounds! Needless to say I was not at all happy about that, as you can already imagine.

I didn't notice a reduction in hunger or notice my pouch "tightening." I am now back to following the regular band rules, and I've dropped 4 of those 8 lbs. Now I'm back to where I started. I know I wanted to try this out to see what would happen, but this didn't work for me.

You can follow the 5 day pouch test at your own discretion, but I do believe it's for the gastric bypass patients, not us bandsters.

Thanks for being a "guinea pig", Puddin and for posting your results. Sorry it didn't work. Good luck getting those other 4 pounds off.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
