LynneB 0 Posted March 16, 2008 Biotin - What You Need to Know About Biotin What is Biotin? Biotin is a B Vitamin that's needed for the formation of fatty acids and glucose, which are essential for the production of energy. It also helps with the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and Proteins. Biotin is found naturally in food. Good dietary sources of biotin include brewer's yeast, nutritional yeast, liver, cauliflower, salmon, bananas, carrots, egg yolks, sardines, legumes and mushrooms. Biotin deficiency isn't common, unless you frequently eat a lot of raw egg white, which contains a Protein that blocks the absorption of biotin. Genetic disorder of biotin deficiency, infant seborrheic dermatitis, surgical removal of the stomach, and excessive alcohol consumption may increase a person's requirement for biotin. Biotin deficiency may lead to skin rash, hair loss, high cholesterol and heart problems. Why Do People Use Biotin? There is little solid evidence that biotin supplements are effective for acne, eczema, brittle nails, diaper rash, cradle cap or Hair loss. Side Effects and Safety Concerns The safety of biotin supplements in pregnant or nursing women, children or people with liver or kidney disease isn't known. People with a history of seizures shouldn't use biotin unless under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner.
kab1278 3 Posted February 11, 2011 I have read people's posts on here who swear by Biotin and people's posts who say they took/take it religiously but have had no luck with it. I have read that rapid weight loss in and of itself can cause hairloss (and I think anesthesia too) but my doctor and internet research says the Hair loss should curb over a few months. I know I have lost a bunch. My poor husband has watched in horror as a comb through my hair after a shower, and I have a clump on hair in my hand. He does love his redheaded wife! Good luck to everyone in finding something that works!
honk 780 Posted February 11, 2011 I also bought Biotin. I am losing alot of hair. My surgeons office said they don't think I'm losing weight fast enough for it to cause Hair loss. Gees thanks! I mentioned that my Thyroid levels came back low in my last blood panel and they said that causes hair loss. I went today to retake the thyroid blood test. The also mentioned that could explain why I am not losing as fast as I would like.
