To Fill Or Not To Fill...Thas is the question!

Recommended Posts

Since my last fill my restriction has been SO RANDOM!!! Mornings are usually tight. lunch could be a Lunchables, Jr. or a few ounces of turkey and a cracker or two. For dinner I shoot for several ounces of Protein first and then some bites of veggie and maybe another side (not bread, Pasta or rice.) Some nights everything goes down EASY. That's when I remember to eat S-L-O-W-L-Y and chew, chew, chew. Night before last was one of those nights. I ate 4 oz of smoked turkey, 2-3 T of BBQ Beans, 1 T of potato salad, a bite of rib and a bite of BBQ beef.

Other times it's 'stuckdom' for me, and I slime and pb. I KNOW my problem is too big of bites, and not chewing enough and waiting between bites.

I have an appointment for a fill this coming Monday and am just not sure if I should or shouldn't. My desire to lose weight is making it hard for me to even consider passing up the 'highly coveted' fill. Part of me is screaming, "GO! GO! GO!" while another part of me says, "NO, NO, NO...not til you MODIFY YOUR BEHAVIOR!"

So, what do you all think??? Do I go....OR not go???

I'm in the same place. How is your weight loss over the past four weeks? If you are losing, I wouldn't do a fill.

I'm kind of in the same place as you, being able to eat quite a bit sometimes and nearly nothing at another meal.

My daughter, who is a year more experienced than I am, says that she actually slimes and pb's more when she needs a fill, because she isn't reminded to eat slowly and choose her foods well. I guess we both need to be hit over the head with the unfortunate consequences of bad choices before we do what we know we should be doing. You would think that the discomfort of that month would be enough to stop me from overeating now, but it doesn't seem to. Sigh.

After a slippage I had all my saline removed. However, I went to the doctor today and I have lost 4.5 lbs since Feb. 2nd and 80 lbs since my June 19th(07) surgery date. My doctor said today that he would recommend waiting (as long as I was still loosing at a good pace). I still have alot of restriction without saline in my band. I would recommend waiting. I have been overfilled and it was miserable.

Ready is right> Too tight is MISERABLE. It also hurts your stomach lining and makes the band a misery. Ask yourself the questions....are you losing? Are you able to be OK w/o eating every few hours because you are hungry? Are you eating small amounts and are full with that? I have hungry days and full days (for lack of a better description). Like yesterday, I ate 1300 calories and today I am at about 700 and am done for the day. I do that up and down every few days. If you are losing, I'd skip the fill.

Thanks for the responses! I have read them all carefully and have decided to cancel my appointment for Monday and wait at least a couple weeks to see how things go. I am not losing as fast as I would like to be, and I know my band could be tighter. However, I feel I need to practice modifying my behavior when it comes to the size of my bites, the rate of speed at which I eat and sometimes the amount that I eat. It's a learning experience for me and each stage takes some getting used to. :o Thanks again!

I can only speak for myself. Personally I am happy if I can only eat 1-2 oz of Protein at once. I am never able to eat 4 oz at one time. I am very happy with my restriction. I typically have some milk in the a.m. and maybe some Soup or lean protein for lunch followed by a very small dinner, 1 oz of protein plus a few bites of vegies. Hope this helps.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
